Hi there George,
If you take a car alternator and remove the rectifier from it, you have a
three phase synchronous generator (with a DC electromagnet on the rotor).
In order to run this you would require what's known as a VVVF drive
(variable voltage, variable frequency).
You could get something like this from transwave for around 200 pounds
maybe, but at the end of the day, this negates the cost saving from using
an old alternator.
When you say a small loco, how much do you expect it to weigh, how much do
you expect it to pull, and what maximum speed are you after?
Yours,
Rich.
PS Do I remember a similar question resulting in a pointer to the 4QD web
site?
