[modeleng] Re: Diamond versus Stone

Ken

A lot of discussion has ensued on various ModEng groups about Diamond wheels
used on HSS (like end-mills).

Seems that the professional recommendation is that Diamond is used for
Carbides (instead of Green-grit "stones") and that CBN (aka Borazon) be used
for HSS (instead of, for example, Alumina Oxide). The considered opinion is
that Diamond - since it is Carbon - will alloy with the steel.

Contrary to the "professional advice" a number of us has used Diamond wheels
successfully to sharpen eng-mills.

Regards
Andy

Subject: [modeleng] Diamond versus Stone

Hi All,
A fellow student at the Workshop Appreciation course is making a tool
grinding rig for attachment to a standard grinder, (Harold Hall design). He
has
been searching for a supplier of stone cup wheels without success, can any
one
point us in the right direction.

He has been advised that the diamond type would not be suitable for
sharpening things such as end mills, is this correct? It seems odd to me,
particularly as diamond type are becoming more common and cheaper now.
