Actually my US Navy "foundry manual for repair ships" only says that curved
spokes are to prevent stress in the spokes and rim when cooling. An
alternative to curved spokes is to make the pattern so the spokes intersect
the hub at one edge, say the left side. When the casting cools, the hub is
able to rotate slightly to relieve the stress. Makes for a mud fence ugly
handwheel, but would save time over making curved spoke patterns. This was
written for handwheels and small pulley castings and no mention was made of
flywheels, but then probably weren't many if any flywheels on warships that
were likely to need being recast. The manual was written with small
castings, (centrifugal pumps, valves, handwheels etc) in mind.
