Hi,

What about MDF board. Not exactly model engineering but an easy material to 
work. Say 15mm end board with top and sides in about 8mm all pinned and 
glued together.You could even round the corners a bit. Give it all a coat of 
Fibre Glass liquid resin to give a strong impervious surface and then paint.
