You could be right about no sand domes Dave,
I was busy watching the constant slipping of the drivers and never noticed
if there was a sand dome on there or not, but I will see if I can find the
tape again. It gets a bit boring to watch because almost all it consists of
is spinning drivers on locomotive after locomotive. Someone decided that
slipping drivers would make a nice tape so they apparently edited out all
the scenes where the locomotives were behaving normally.
I can see you do not know what the Cuban name of the guy who sprinkles sand
on the rails is, his moniker is "Manuel", what else did you expect???!! [:>)
Slack coal: When I was a lad in Jackson, TN, my father had a coal burning
furnace installed in the basement. This furnace was especially designed for
burning slack coal and worked quite well. We only had to fire it three or
four times a day and it would hold a banked fire all night. We just turned
up the thermostat the next morning and in a few minutes the blower would be
putting out hot air. The only problem with the slack coal was that it would
frequently form a crust and gas would accumulate under it which resulted in
an explosion when flames broke through. On the back of the smokebox/heater
doughnut there was a gravity closed door about 10 inches in diameter. When
the gas exploded, the door would fly open to help relieve the pressure and
immediately slam back shut. Disconcerting at first, but we got used to it
when we realized the furnace was not going to carry the house to the moon!!!
