[modeleng] Re: Char

Hi Jesse
The engine I was driving yesterday has a long narrow firebox that is fairly
deep, but it dosent matter if I run a deep fire or not it steams like a
little devil as long as the front is kept covered. The fire grate itself is
cast iron but the ratio of air gaps to bars is equal. As Cliff say
Anthracite nuts are about the right size for 5" gauge. I have used larger
size anthracite or steam coal (so large it will only just fit in the door)
but prefer anthracite as being slightly asthmatic I find it doesnt affect me
as much.

Andy,

What type grate area do you have for burning anthracite? I always heard
that it was a bit hard to burn except in those wide Wooten fireboxes. All
of my lokies have deep narrow "keyhole" fireboxes except for the Mich-Cal
Shay.
