[modeleng] Re: Chain Sprockets

At our sawmill, I ran Browning #60 chain and sprockets for 30 plus years and
never replaced the chains or sprockets. They ran at about 60 RPM and
except when lumber was being carried along, they never had any real load.
The chains were lubed almost every week with a patent chain lube (Schafer
Petroleum Co) that contained molybdenum and resembled well used motor oil
with ample amounts of penetrating oil in it. Smell was pretty bad too and
it was worse than printer's ink to get off of your hands and clothing., but
it was the best chain and cable lube I ever used. 3/4" carriage cables were
lasting 6 weeks until I started using this stuff and then they went to 18
weeks before breaking.

Oh, BTW: The 1-15/16" Browning ball bearing pillow blocks were never
lubricated and they ran for nearly 40 years or until the mill shut down for
lack of logs and the Ruskies started selling lumber and logs to our Asian
customers at practically give away prices.
