Ian,
I am sure that somewhere in one of the back issues of Home Shop Machinist
there was an article where someone had modified and fitted an electonic
vernier to the tailpost of a lathe.
I am sure that there was a collar placed around the tailstock barrel which
had an inbuilt clamp for the moving part of the digital vernier and the
stationary part was fittied to the body by a small clamp which in turn had
been attached to the body.
Not much info, but it may be enough to start drawing.
