Peter,
Some people say to wait till the boiler is at about 30 PSI before blowing
down. In full size practice of course the boiler was blown down frequently
while running, but naturally they didn't blow it all the way down as we do.
Better get to blowing down every day no matter how much trouble it is to
fill the Hunslet. There was a sectionalized boiler at Mid-South a few years
back and it was unbelievable how much crud was in there piled up in the
water legs and between the flues. I don't know if it had never been blown
down or just not frequently enough, but that boiler was full of rusty
minerals.
