In my view, at only a few psi.
All you need is sufficient pressure to blow out all the muck.

I now have to engines that I can blow down.

So far, the Hunslet ("The Widow" or "Lady Mari Jacqueline" to give her, her
full name!) has not been blown down for the simple reason that it is a right
pain to refill.

Shirley (the Bagnall) has a super blow down system.  It is permanently
plumbed from the blow down valve, through a shut off cock to a length of
copper pipe that I also use to refill the boiler (it takes about 2 minutes
to refill!)  [I plan to adopt the same system on The Widow at the end of the
season].

The question is very simple, at what pressure do (or should you) you blow
down from?  If you blow down from a too high a pressure can you put thermal
stresses on the boiler? (i.e. rapid cooling)
