A British model engineer I know, of fairly long standing, swears by a
sort of quasi-lapping technique. He uses stainless balls (although either
metal will do) and instead of whacking the ball into the seat he spins the
rod (with attached sacrificial ball) in the drill press. He places a
couple of layers of common newsprint on the seat and brings the spinning
ball down onto the seat once with sufficient pressure to punch through the
paper and viola! . . a perfectly lapped seat. Apparently the newsprint
contains just enough natural abrasiveness to do the job without overdoing
it. I've not tried it . . . yet, but I will soon.
