I understood the molds (old) Stuart used were porous and allowed
gasses to escape from almost anywhere in the mold and eliminatedventing,
blowholes, and sand inclusions. But for decades Stuarts was THE place for
model engineers to send one-off patterns for castings, which they would
have done in green-sand molds, and I never read a report that mentioned a
bad casting, only superb ones that cut like cheese.

Let's think about that for a moment, considering you used to be able
to get a slice of apple pie and a cup of coffee for 10p. We liked Stuart's
prices way back when but it's been stated that the Models Dept of old
Stuart Turner lost money, so apparently they should have been charging
more. Cheddar took over and prices rose but they still couldn't make it
go. So maybe the current prices aren't greed at all but reflect what they
should have been all along (relatively speaking) in order to simply stay in
business, or make it worth while to stay in business. Since I bought my
first Stuart kit I can point to countless numbers of things in life that
have increased in price at least 10-fold, and Stuart kits in that time have
increased at roughly the same rate.
