Indeed he did (& he still got the patches to prove it) but that was a
combination of aluminium/trapped moisture/hurry.
I regulary melt up to 10 lbs of lead in nothing more than an old tinn can,
they burn out after a few years but what the heck - old fish tins are cheap.
In case you are wondering, I've used these 'melting pots' for 40 years or
better without mishap, do the actual melting on an old electric ring that
has a good temp control - something that is vital for bullet work. My
dipper, BTW, is a stainless steel desert spoon.
