[modeleng] Re: Allen heads

You gents ever wonder why the auto makers started using those hex head bolts
with the centre of the head depressed? Cheaper per part because of the
metal saved of course. I remember seeing ads for those bolts in trade
magazines back when they first appeared. "You will save metal with each
fastener plus your customers will see them as being a quality product
because of the depressed centre." Those were not the exact words used, but
that was the gist of the message. Next they started making the washer as
part of the bolt head. Saved handling/stocking washers plus faster
assembly. Rest assured as Jeff has said, the trend is cheapness always.
(Always? "Always" has been copyrighted by Wal-mart in case you haven't
noticed it). Just look on their buildings where the word appears and you
will see the little ® after or below the word. I suppose "Always®" also
means "Always made in China" in their case.

Now I am getting out of the fastener forum before monitor Al Messy clamps
down on us.
