[modeleng] A4 chime whistle

Folks,
There is new (actually new old) and possbily applicable whistle
technology in print. Larry Bangham, of California, has spent several years
developing a means for creating a reasonably accurate representation of a
locomotive whistle which can be installed in a very small place,
specifically the domes of Ga1 locomotives. This is possible by employing
what known as a Helmholzt Resonator. (Hermann Helmholtz, physiologist,
ca.1862.)
Although specific to Ga1 applications, several articles describing
all the Bangham Helmholtz resonator work have been published in Steam in
the Garden Magazine (US). The effect produced is quite amazing although I
don't know if multpile tones are possible using one resonator - I have told
you all I know about the subject. In any case I would think there would
be plenty of space on a 5"ga loco to put this technique to use and use
multiple resonators if necessary.
LBSC once (& maybe more than once) described a whistle arrangement
where he called for connecting the whistle bell chamber to the air chamber
inside a hollow steam dome, the purpose being to lower the pitch by
increasing the "air column." An accomplished machinist and live steamer
friend of mine tried this several times (following the "words & music"
exactly of course) all of which ended in utter failure without so much as a
wheeze from the so-called whistle. So much for the "words & music."

Regards,
Harry
