Hi Julian,
This might not be as straight forward as you hope. Firstly
you will need to be aware of the dangers of "messing about" with mains
electricity. Any Capacitor will be fairly large and will almost
certainly not fit within the motor body (you will need a case to
contain the capacitor and wiring). The motors also need to be able to
be changed via links from "Y" to Delta configuration i.e. from 410V to
to 230V. The capacitor value will need to chosen to match the motor
rating.
I think a convertor is your best bet, but if you want to go down the
route you suggest, read a copy of "Electric motors in the home
workshop" by Jim Cox. It's an excellent book and explains exactly what
you intend.
