Hi Ron,

I made a dummy piece of pipe from steel rod about 6 to 7 thou larger than
the actual 3/16" copper pipe. I then made up some mild steel vice jaws with
a small radius on the top edges. A piece of annealed copper 0.010ins thick
was placed centrally on top of the vice with the jaws slightly open. the
dummy pipe was laid centrally on top of the copper sheet and gently tapped
such that the copper wrapped round the dummy pipe as it was forced between
the vice jaws. At the same time I gently tapped the outer edges of the
copper to form the flanges. To finish off I laid a strip of copper 3/16"
wide by 0.010" thick on top of the dummy pipe and hammered a piece of flat
steel on top of the whole thing. On removing from the vice I trimmed the
flanges to width with tinsnips.
I then had a straight pipe cover. To bend it I simply annealed it, placed a
piece of annealed copper pipe inside it and gently bent it round a suitably
curved piece of steel.
I had shied away from this job for some time but, when I finally tackled
it - bingo! it was remarkably easy and the end results were really good. If
you wish I will send you a picture or two off list.
Regards
Barrie
