What do you mean about Yamaha not sampling their own pianos? That is
where the piano sounds in the Motif come from.

The main Motif XS piano sample is from a Yamaha CF series concert grand.
Unfortunately, that is kind of a bright piano for general use, but I
suppose that they were aiming this at the classical crowd first.

The S90ES piano, the one that has an XS version in the new XSpanded bank
I uploaded is a Yamaha S700 piano. The S700 is sort of a strange piano,
since there isn't a real Yamaha S700 piano for sale. The S700 is a piano
that was specifically designed for sampling. Details are sketchy on
this, but supposedly Yamaha built a piano where the piano keys could be
mechanically triggered by another device at specific velocity levels.
The project supposedly cost Yamaha over $250,000. Supposedly, this is
why the sample switching between velocity levels and key ranges is so
smooth on that piano. I'm not sure how the CF piano was recorded, but
they probably had a human player operating keys.

The CP70 electric grand is a sample from a Yamaha CP70 piano, but the
detail of sampling in the CP70 voices doesn't even approach the level of
attention that was paid to the acoustic pianos. Still, that's a Yamaha
instrument, also.

Anyhow, the Motif pianos are all real Yamaha pianos. Most of the other
instruments in the Motif come from Yamaha instruments, also. Whether you
like the tone of any particular instrument or not is a matter of
personal taste. Yamaha is certainly a Unique company in this regard.
Korg, Roland, and Kurzweil all built their keyboard voices through a mix
of sampling instruments on their own and licensing recordings from other
companies. In most cases, the instrument voices in the Motif are
produced from samples made by Yamaha, of instruments that were built by
Yamaha. I think that is one big reason why the Motif is still king of
the workstation keyboards when it comes to imitating the sound of real
instruments.

They did give us the plg 150 dr, and pc cards. Those had the drums from
the
tyros and they were a bit different. And the did come out with some
sample
banks that weren't all that good at all. I have demos of them to prove
it.
Damon and I both cringed at them. But I hope the can put something cool
out.
After all, they do make drum kits for real and why not mic one of their
own
up and sample it. Guess that's not saying much either, they make pianos
and
how many sounds do you hear that say Yamaha studio grand or anything
like
that. Lol

Hey, don't be too negative. After all, when is the last time that we got
a
new acoustic kit for the Motif from Yamaha? I don't think that they've
added
any new acoustic kits since the original Motif. There were little
touches
added in the XS, like the toms having multiple layers, but no new kits.
I
think that the drums are the area of the Motif that has changed the
least
since it was originally released.

They won't be, they usually aren't. Don't get your hopes up.

Wow. We really need new rock drums for the motif, so I hope these are
good.

Over on Motifator, there has been an announcement that Yamaha will be
releasing new drum voices to complement the new instrument voices for
the
XS. There will be new multi-sampled acoustic drums, including a new oak
kit
and new power kit. There aren't many details on the electronic drums
that
will be included, but we've been told to expect new hip hop kits. The
set
will also feature new percussion kits, including ethnic percussion.

I've recently been working on the final touches of a complete setup
package
for those of you that are working with either Sonar or QWS as an
accessible
computer-based sequencer. I know that there is a lot of setup involved
when
someone first gets a Motif in order to get everything synced up and
running
with the computer, so I'll be posting setup instructions, Sonar and QWS
instrument definitions for the XS, and Motif mix dump request macros so
that
you can save Motif mix changes as part of your Sonar projects. Most
importantly, I'll post a new all file that includes all of the new XS
instrument and drum voices plus is preconfigured to work in Sonar.
You'll
need to install the XS USB or mLAN driver on your computer, and will
need to
perform some basic setup in Sonar, but, as far as the Motif, you'll just
need to turn it on, load this all file, and you'll be ready to sequence
with
Sonar and all of the new voices from Yamaha.
