Thanks for helping me with this.

If they can work together, there is a trick or special workaround involved.
You'll have to try and call Tascam for help of this type.

I'm interested to know the solution, though. The FW1884 is very popular with
blind people. There are several other XS/FW1884 owners, so please let the
list know if you discover anything.

The ADAT unit allows me to set its clock by hand wich is nice, so I set it
to 44.1 24bit but the problem is that even if I set it by hand if the
1884 control panel is not set to adat for its clock as soon as I turn on
the adat it starts chattering at me something awful.
Basically it needs to sink with the 1884 via the adat port or it does not
work. This is a good one ha?

Hmm. Maybe your adat device is running at 48kHz? I'm not sure, but I think
they all do. Use S/PDIF for clock, and then try to manipulate settings on
the adat device to get it to match.

Yes all the changes that I am making are on the FW1884 control panel.
Here is how its set up.
Control Protocol, set to FW 1884 Native
Clocking Sample rate, set to 44.1KHZ
Clock source is set to Digital in ADAT,
What I just discovered is that If I set the Clock source to SPDIF the
clicking and popping gos away but then I cant use my interface that I have
plugged in to the ADAT port. Looks like I cant have it both ways unless you
all know of something I am missing here.

When you talk about how your DAW is set, I hope that you aren't talking
about your recording host software like Sonar. Your recording settings in
Sonar, regarding sample rate/bit depth, have absolutely nothing to do with
the configuration of your audio interface. Any changes that you're making
regarding the connection of the Motif should be going on in the
FW1884 control panel.

Also, there is no need to concern yourself with clock transmition.
Unlike other digital audio formats, S/PDIF transmits at a fixed clock.
There is no need or ability to transmit a clock signal for an S/PDIF
connection.

I've used the Motif XS's s/PDIF connection very rarely. I used it with my
MOTU Ultra lite and my Presonus Firebox. It worked fine in both cases. I'm
sure that it can work with the FW1884, given the right FW1884 settings.
Those other interfaces are very cheap when compared to the FW1884.

Of course, mLAN is quite superior as a digital connection, but XP doesn't
have sufficient audio resources to run mLAN with another audio interface at
the same time. Based on what I've read, I think that Vista will allow mLAN
and another audio interface to run at the same time, but I haven't had
enough courage yet to try Vista on my DAW.

Ok good because that's what I have my DAW set to.
So now I know that its not the clock settings so I am back at step 1.
Any other ideas anyone? Poor me jajaja.

I've got the Tascam US-144. Maybe you should set sample clock source on
"internal", not automatic. In my case, I can't switch between 44.1 khz and
higher, if the clock source on tascam is set on automatic.

How ever, the owner's manual says that the digital out of the XS is on
44.1 khz , 24 bits. I don't think, you can change that for the XS.

No, it means that the digital connection on the Tascam will probably need to
be set for 48kHz. I don't know if that means that the entire Tascam system
must be at 44kHz or not.

I'm not even 100% certain that the s/pdif out on the Motif XS runs at 48.
You might try using the Tascame at 48 to see if that makes a difference.

I wouldn't run your DAW at 48kHz. That is an odd-ball rate. Most people run
at 44 or 96. If you run at 48, it will make it difficult to exchange
projects with others.

Thanks Bryan,
So that means that if I want to use the Motif through the SPDIF I have to
set everything to record at 48KHZ?

Well, the clock setting on the Tascam is probably wrong.

You should investigate on the Tascam, though, as there isn't anything that
you can change on the Motif.

It was a guess that that is what is causing my problem. I have the Motif
plugged in to the in of the Tscam FW 1884 and when I hold a note I get
clicks sometimes on the write then the left channel. I have no idea what to
try to solve this.

Why do you need to do that? SPDIF on the XS works at a fixed sampling rate
of 48kHz, and I think, 24-bit resolution. Anyhow, you can't change it.

work correctly through SPDIF but I don't know how. Can anyone give me the
steps on how to get this done.?
