The Other E-Mail Threat: File Corruption in Outlook Express
By Tom Koch
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/filecorruption.mspx
It is a rare day on the Internet that we do not see some scary warning about
the latest e-mail threat from viruses, worms, and Trojan Horses. But there is
another e-mail threat that can be just as damaging as a virus and yet is rarely
discussed in computer media. That threat is file corruption, a somewhat nerdy
term for damage to a file that prevents a computer program from being able to
use it. For Outlook Express users, file corruption can often mean the
disappearance of entire folders of saved e-mail. In this article we'll look at
the common causes of corruption, how to avoid it, and how to recover messages
if it occurs.

Eraser
http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/
Freeware

Free Secure Erase Utility. Eraser is a free, GNU license utility that will
securely erase files, folders or even whole disks from any Windows or DOS PC.
Eraser overwrites data area with selectable random data patterns and also wipes
data in the paging file, Internet cache, temporary files, Internet cookies,
unused disk space and a number of other places where data can secretly lurk.
It handles FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS partitions as well. Erasing files with high
security will always be a difficult and time consuming task and can never offer
absolute
100% safety. However, Eraser makes the task about as easy as it can be, with a
security level beyond most conceivable requirements.

Crush Those Cookies

Some people like cookies. Others avoid 'em. But like them or not, Internet
Explorer likes to create secret cookies -- files on your hard drive that
contain information about Web sites you've recently visited.

Although Internet Explorer lets any site create a cookie, if you don't like the
concept of cookies, you may turn it off: Click on Internet Options from
Internet Explorer's Tools menu and click on the Security Tab. Click on the
Globe icon and click on the Custom Level button. From there, you can Disable
cookies, Enable them, or make a site ask you for permission before creating a
cookie.

Windows ME ~ XP backup

If you have WinXP Home, you will not have the Backup option.
That is because it is not installed by default.
However, if you have the WinXP Installation CD, you can easily find it.

WinME: Installing MS Backup
By default, WindowsME does not give you the option to install MS Backup.
However, this program is on the original WinME installation CD in the
 \Add-ons\MSBackup directory.

WinXP: Installing the MS Backup Utility
If you use Windows XP Home Edition, you may be surprised to find that there
is not a backup utility included by default. Go ahead and check under
System Tools in the Start Menu - it's not there! Although XP Pro Edition
and XP Home both ship with NTBackup, only XP Pro installs NTBackup by
default.
Fortunately, Microsoft was kind enough to bury it on the XP installation CD
so that you can install and use it anyway.
It is in your WinXP installation CD if you have the RETAIL version.
Its location on your CD is in
CD-ROM Drive:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP

Download NTBackup utility (the one that came with WinXP CD) from here:
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi
** this is a direct link to the download EXE

Antivirus software is a good choice to scan your system for possible viruses,
however no virus scanner is 100% effective as manufactures cannot keep up with
the rapid change of viruses that happens daily.
Be sure to update yours regularly.
