Hector Protector Button/Screen Saver
http://www.microsoft.com/nz/athome/security/children/hector.mspx
This Hector Protector? button has been created by the NetSafe® Programme
of New Zealand to help keep children safe online. The function of this
button is to give a child the ability to quickly cover the screen of the
computer with a screen saver of Hector Protector? when they encounter
material that frightens or upsets them. With a click of the button, the
problem is covered over by Hector until a trusted adult can come and deal
with the situation. Hector also gives children very positive feedback for
using the button and talking with an adult about the problem.
There are separate down loads for users of Windows XP and for all other
Windows operating system users

New Browser Flaw Out By Sean Michael Kerner
http://www.esecurityplanet.com/trends/article.php/3440971
It's not rare when a flaw disables Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE), but it
is rare when the same flaw affects the alternatives.
That's the unfortunate case with a new bug that targets the Mozilla Browser,
Mozilla Firefox, Opera and Apple Safari. It causes them to crash and could
potentially form the basis of an exploit that would affect virtually all
major browsers.
The bug has been called the Infinite Array Sort Denial Of Service
Vulnerability and causes the affected browsers to execute an infinite
JavaScript array sort. That operation in turn effectively causes a DoS on
the browser in question and causes it to crash by exhausting stack memory.
At present there are no confirmed exploits in the wild that expand the
vulnerability to execute malicious code, though that may only be a matter of
time.

Breaking, Entering Your PC By Terry McDermott LA Times Staff Writer
<http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=2026&u=/latimests/breakingen
teringyourpc&printer=1>
Shorter link; http://shorterlink.com/?TPFPTX
It can, and often does, start something like this:
You're online, maybe searching for a specific piece of information, maybe
just cruising the Web. I was investigating new search technologies that were
advertised as useful in dealing with variations in the spelling of names and
had read that Lycos, a pre-Google Internet portal and search engine, had
developed some.
I found links for Lycos and clicked on one. That was the beginning. Within
minutes, my computer was swamped with advertisements ? pop-ups,
pop-unders, pop-all-overs. There were so many I couldn't close them before
others started appearing. I had to shut the computer down.
When it restarted, my Web browser had a new pornographic home page, and soon
another flood of advertisements was underway. This time, I was able to get
rid of most of it and resume working.

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
They're back!
PowerToys are additional programs that developers work on after a product
has been released to manufacturing. They add fun and functionality to the
Windows experience.
Download
ClearType Tuner PowerToy
HTML Slide Show Wizard
Alt-Tab Replacement
Open Command Window Here
Tweak UI
Tweak UI for Itanium?-based systems
Power Calculator
Image Resizer
CD Slide Show Generator
Virtual Desktop Manager
Taskbar Magnifier
Webcam Timershot
Note We've taken great care to ensure that PowerToys operate as they should,
but they are not part of Windows and are not supported by Microsoft. For
this reason, Microsoft Technical Support is unable to answer questions about
PowerToys. PowerToys are for Windows XP only.

Jotti's malware scan 2.42
http://virusscan.jotti.dhs.org/
If you have a file that you are concerned about this site will scan it for
malicious content.
By up loading files to this online service you agree that your files will be
stored locally for personal virus collection interests.
Furthermore: this service is by no means 100% safe. If this scanner says
'OK', it does not necessarily mean the file is clean. There could be a whole
new virus on the loose. NEVER EVER rely on one single product only, not even
this service, even though it utilizes several products. Therefore, I cannot
and will not be held responsible for any damage caused by results presented
by this non-profit online service.
Also, I am aware of the implications of a setup like this. I am sure this
whole thing is by no means scientifically correct, since this is a fully
automated service (although manual correction is possible). I am aware, in
spite of efforts to proactively counter these, false positives might occur,
for example. I do not consider this a very big issue, so please do not
e-mail me about it. This is a simple online scan service, not the university
of Wichita (however, manual correction is performed on a regular basis).
Although I try to keep these results as accurate as humanly possible, the
only viable conclusion to be drawn here: "100% protection" is a myth.

Optimize System Performance in XP
Your Windows XP system is automatically configured to handle system
performance according to default settings, which you can alter depending on
your working needs. Settings which deal with visual effects can enhance the
XP interface, but can also slow down your processor speed. To improve the
performance of your XP system, you can customize these settings.
Right-click on the My Computer icon and then choose Properties from the
shortcut menu.
In the System Properties dialog box, select the Advanced tab, and then in
the Performance panel, click the Settings button to open the Performance
Options dialog box.
Select the Visual Effects tab, and then select the Custom option button.
Then, from the list box, deselect those visual effects options that you
don't want Windows XP to generate in order to increase your processor speed.
Once you're finished, click Apply and then OK, and your setting changes will
take effect.
