Damn Small Linux

If you've always wanted to try out the Linux operating system, but haven't
had the time or inclination to delve into it too deeply, Damn Small Linux
might be just the right distribution for you.
The whole thing weighs in at under 50 MB, which is very small for a complete
operating system.
The OS boots from a CD, so you don't have to worry about installing it on
your hard-drive or fiddling around with Linux partitions. It comes with some
essential applications such as a browser, email client, word processor and
graphics tools. Naturally, the OS is a little limited because of its small
size, but this distribution represents an excellent way for Linux virgins to
get their feet wet.
You will need a computer that allows you to boot from a CD. If necessary,
you may need to access the BIOS and configure your machine so that it will
boot from a CD, rather than a floppy disk.

Using System Restore

When a Windows XP user asks how to fix a problem they've recently started
having with their PC my first response is to use System Restore to roll it
back to a point just before the problem started. I've found the majority
either don't know how to use it, don't know what it does, turned it off
because it uses too much disk space and virtually all say that Microsoft's
Help file is not very helpful to which I'd agree. However it is one of the
best utilities Microsoft has ever written and works extremely well.
Using System Restore is a straightforward, step by step help guide
explaining how to use it with a minimal amount of disk space, what it does
and how it works. System Restore can return your system to an earlier state
if problems are caused by a program you installed, malicious web sites,
recovery of deleted files even after you've emptied the Recycle Bin, a
corrupted Registry as well as many other common problems. By using it
regularly you'll always be able to fix a problem in minutes. The article is
available for viewing online and as a downloadable Help file (.chm) for
installation on your PC.

Taskbar
If you want your taskbar in view when the desktop is blank, but out of the
way of open windows, you can set it to stay underneath all open windows.
You can do this by right-clicking a blank area of the taskbar and selecting
Properties.
Once the Taskbar properties is displayed, deselect "Always on top"
(this option is selected by default), then click OK.
Note: "Always on top" may be worded differently depending on your version
on Windows.

Mike's Friday Tip ~ Hidden Restore Partitions
A growing trend with some of the PC builders is to put a hidden partition of
the hard drive.
This partition will often contain all the drivers, and system specific data,
as well as the OEM version of the Operating System.
When you have problems and call the manufacturer for help they will often
instruct you to restore the computer using this hidden partition.
It is wise to consider this before formatting the hard drive.
Even with a full version of the OS you may still encounter driver problems
with some vendors products.
If you are thinking of wiping the hard drive make sure you have the drivers
and other critical information backed up.
