Introducing Index Dat Spy donationware
http://indexdatspy.stevengould.org/
The quickest and easiest way to view the contents of your index.dat files.

Index Dat Spy is a powerful and easy-to-use application that exposes the
contents of any index.dat file - even if the file is currently in use by
Windows. It translates a great deal of binary data - i.e. internal computer
information - into a more human-readable form. And you don't have to be a
programmer to read it either!

index.dat files have been the subject of much discussion since Microsoft has
released relatively little information about them. Even after clearing your
browser history, emptying your cache and deleting your cookies from Internet
Explorer, there still remains information about where you've been surfing
hidden away in these index.dat files. Although Microsoft claims that their
is nothing special or secretive about these files, all versions of Windows
tend to go to great lengths to obscure these files.

The author of other popular Windows utilities such as CleanUp! and Private
Eye now brings you Index Dat Spy - an easy-to-use, small utility to expose
the information stored inside your index.dat files. Like his other
utilities, Index Dat Spy also can be used as a way to protect your privacy
on the Internet.

No gimmicks here, Index Dat Spy is so easy to install and use that you'll be
spying on your index.dat files in minutes.
++
Thanks for trying Index Dat Spy.

Patching the Problematic IE 6.01 Patch
http://www.scotsnewsletter.com/56.htm
Back in February, I wrote about a problem some people were having with
"Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (832894)"
released Feb. 2, 2004. Where I work at TechWeb, the entire company had to
prohibit this patch, and there are at least two subsequent patches that had
similar negative effects on a Java-based internal enterprise application
that's mission critical to what we do.

Because several of you wrote me confirming that you also had the problem,
and some of you wrote me about possible solutions (all of which were a
little on the complex side for my taste), I'm taking a moment to point out a
Microsoft-released fix for the problem that takes all of about 30 seconds to
implement.

The easy way to install this is to download this 1K file.
<a href="http://www.scotsnewsletter.com/art/56/enableAuthInURL.zip";>

Place the file in a folder, then follow these steps:

1. Extract the lone file, which is called enableAuthInURL.reg, from the Zip
archive.

2. Double click the .reg file. That will automatically edit your system
registry with a very simple addendum.

3. Reboot your computer.

4. These steps can be performed either before or after you install Windows
patches that cause issues with URLs that contain username and password
information.

Notes: This has only been tested with Windows XP. It will probably work fine
with Windows 98/Me systems, but I have not tested that. There is no
automatic way to remove this registry edit. However, anyone familiar with
the System Registry Editor will be able to easily delete the key that is
added. Also, Windows XP users can set a named system restore point before
double-clicking the Reg file.

For more information, check out Microsoft KB article 834489.

Ghost-It!
http://home.rochester.rr.com/artcfox/GhostIt/index.html
Make any window intelligently translucent (Win2k/XP only)

A program that runs in the system tray, and lets you turn windows into
"ghost" windows.

Ghost windows are very special windows. First of all, a ghost window is
translucent, meaning you can see through it to
whatever is underneath. Secondly, a ghost window will always appear on top
of other windows. Thirdly, when a ghost
window loses the input focus, it remains translucent and always on top, but
all clicks will pass right through it like it
wasn't even there?until it becomes the active window again.

Double-clicking its tray icon (a ghost) will turn the mouse cursor into a
ghost. If you then left-click on a window with the
ghost cursor, it will turn that window into a ghost window. Right-clicking
on the tray icon and selecting Un-Ghost will turn
the mouse cursor into a ghost with a slash through it. If you then
left-click on a ghost window with this cursor, it will turn
that window back into a normal window. Selecting Un-Ghost All from the tray
menu will automatically un-ghost all
ghosted windows. Exiting the program will automatically un-ghost all ghosted
windows.

There are two ways to make a ghost window the active window again. The first
is by clicking the window's icon in the
taskbar, the second is by moving the mouse over the window you wish to make
active, and pressing the hot key defined
in the Ghost-It! configuration dialog (the default hot key is Ctrl+Alt+A).

Deleting Unwanted Programs
It seems like I get questions all the time asking how to remove / uninstall
programs.
So, here's the step-by-step procedure:

1. The first thing to do is click the Start menu, Programs.
Then hunt for the program you want to delete.
Oftentimes, you'll find an Uninstall program under it's program group.

2. Another way would be to click the Start button, Settings, Control Panel.
Then open the Add/Remove programs icon.
You'll see a list of programs that Windows can remove from your system.
Just click the one you would like to remove and hit the OK button.

3. If neither of the above works, you can always go to the program's folder
and delete it.
However, there is no guarantee that the program was confined to that
folder.
It could have other files distributed throughout your computer.

4. Finally, you might consider a program like Clean Sweep.
Once installed, it watches which program files go where and can remove
unneeded files for you.

Keep in mind that some of the files that get placed on your hard drive when
you install a program
are basically updates to some of your existing files. So if you are
uninstalling something and get
a message saying not all the files from a program could be removed, it may
be due to the fact
that other programs also use these files.

Antivirus software is a good choice to scan your system for possible viruses,
however no virus scanner is 100% effective as manufactures cannot keep up with
the rapid change of viruses that happens daily.
Be sure to update yours regularly.
