Mike's Friday Tip ~ Using the Hoast File
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
One of the unfortunate occurances we encounter while surffing the web is
'something' changing "Hijacking" our home page.
You can use a HOSTS file to block ads, banners, cookies, web bugs, and even
most hijackers. This is accomplished by blocking the Server that supplies
these little gems.
Example - the following entry 127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net blocks all files
supplied by the DoubleClick Server to the web page you are viewing. This
also prevents the server from tracking your movements.
Now includes most major parasites, hijackers and unwanted Search Engines!
In many cases this can speed the loading of web pages by not having to wait
for these ads, banners, hit counters, etc. to load. This also helps to
protect your Privacy by blocking servers that track your viewing habits,
known as "click-thru tracking".
Editors Note: However as time has progressed the focus of this project has
changed from blocking ads/banners to protecting the user from the many
parasites that now exist on the Internet. It doesn't serve much purpose if
you block the ad banner from displaying, but get hijacked by a parasite from
an evil script contained on the web site. The object is to surf faster while
preserving your Safety, Security and Privacy. [more info]
To view the HOSTS file in plain text form.
(139 kb) http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt
Download: hosts.zip [right-click - Select: Save Target As] [Updated
12-15-03]
Unzip and place in the appropriate installed location:
Note: the below locations are for the default paths, edit as needed.
Windows XP = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98\ME = C:\WINDOWS
There is no need to install, turn on, or change any settings. Windows
automatically looks for the existence of a HOSTS file and if found, checks
the HOSTS file first for entries to the web page you just requested. The
127.0.0.1 is the location of your computer, so when the entry
"ad.doubleclick.net" is requested your computer thinks 127.0.0.1 is the
location of the file. When this file is not located it skips onto the next
file and thus the ad server is blocked from loading the banner, Cookie, or
some unscrupulous javascript file.
In case you're wondering ... this all happens in microseconds, which is much
faster than trying to fetch a file from half way around the world.
++ there are links contained in this article which do not display in this
plain text format.

EARTH MEDITATION
I have recently put on my website a small logo of an earth and a dove.
www.paulbura.co.uk
Just click on to this Earth Logo and it will instantly bring up the picture
of the Earth in space cradled by a pair of hands.
Take out two minutes of each day to 'tune in' to the image of this planet
and in so doing say the words:
1. LOVE (Breathe in, breathe out, pause)
2. LIGHT (Breathe in, breathe out, pause)
3. LAUGHTER (Breathe in, breathe out, pause)
4. BALANCE (Breathe in, breathe out, pause)
5. HARMONY (Breathe in, breathe out, pause)
6. HEALING (Breathe in, breathe out, pause)
7. PEACE (Breathe in, breathe out, pause)
The word that incorporates all of these words is LOVE. Even if you don't
believe that, just take a couple of minutes each day [even if it's only ONE
minute!] to say these words either out loud or internally. The more people
the merrier, and a more harmonious and peaceful place this world will become
no matter what you believe or what creed you abide by, whatever your belief
system.YOU WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!
PS. Print this image out and hang it up in the office, garage, boat, car,
toilet, or wherever or whatever your place of work or leisure. Ask
permission first.or just say: 'To h*ll with it, I'll do it anyway!'
LUV N' LITE N' LARFTER.

K9 - Version 1.18
http://www.keir.net/k9.html
K9 is an email filtering application that works in conjunction with your
regular POP3 email program and automatically classifies incoming emails as
spam (junk email) or non-spam without the need for maintaining dozens of
rules or constant updates to be downloaded. It uses intelligent statistical
analysis that can result in extremely high accuracy over time.
K9 learns from its mistakes and becomes better and better at being able to
identify spam. More importantly it learns to recognize what you consider to
be spam.
K9 is for standard POP3 email accounts only. It does not directly support
Hotmail, AOL or any other kind of webmail type systems, nor does it support
SSL or secure authentication as used by MSN.
You can choose to download either the minimalist ZIP file containing the K9
executable only (no installer or uninstaller) or the full installation EXE
that will enable you to uninstall the application and all associated files
and registry items if you wish to.
When installing over a previous version you will not lose any information or
"learning". K9 comprises the executable file K9.exe and a Readme.txt text
file and upon running for the first time will create a sub-directory called
Emails containing a further 5 directories. It will also create a new
registry key at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\KeirNet\K9. No other files or
directories or registry items are created anywhere. K9 does not contain
spyware, adware or any kind of malware whatsoever. 100% pure. 100% free.

Mailcleaning must be running BEFORE you get your email. You have the
possibility to check and clean your mail first before you going to download
it to your own machine and read it with your own mail program.

spammers and you create a list wich holds all email addresses from spammers
to block next time you get your email. With a click on 1 button all email

Window States
Ever have a program that always starts in a "normal" state but you really
want it maximized?
Well, here's a little trick to help you do just that (and more) with a quick
little bit of shortcut editing.
Note: although this seems to work on most programs, sometimes you'll run
across a program that just won't cooperate.
1. First, right-click the shortcut to the program and select Properties.
2. Under the Shortcut tab, you'll see a drop box labeled "Run."
In that box, you'll find options to run the program as either Normal
(it starts up at it's default size),
Minimized (it starts up minimized to the toolbar), or Maximized (it
starts up full screen).
Select the start-up state you want and you're all set.

ID ~Security Suggestion
Here is something to think about.
With the growing instances of Identity Theft, it becomes evident that we
must exercise a degree of security in our 'Web World'<G>
One of the easiest ways for 'scamers' to put it politely! to obtain
information about us is to search genealogy webs to get a lot of the
information we would not knowingly provide to them were the to come knocking
at our door.
It is also a good idea to not use your full name in your email address. In
fact some security professionals recommend using a name which is not gender
specific, as sometimes predators will target gender specific names.
Yahoo will let you pick your own Yahoo ID so use it to mask your true
identity from those who may target you or your family. A nick name could be
your best alternative.
There are numerous other sites that offer free email addresses, a Google
search will bring up lots of alternatives.
If you are using on of the most common email program you will find that you
don't have to put your full (real) name in the "from' field.
In Outlook Express go to;
Tools> Internet Accounts>
* The name of your email provider (IPS)*
Properties> General Tab> Name
*put what you wish to appear in the "From" when you send an email*
