Eye Witness
http://ibiscom.com/
The motto of this site is: "History through the eyes of those who lived it."

Sounds interesting, huh? Well just about every time period is covered on
this history site. So what makes it
different, other than its eye witness ploy?

It is presented by Ibis Communications, a digital publisher of educational
programming, and it is quite thorough. Go ahead travel to the time period of
your choice, and notice the links on the side of other incidents that
happened in that time period. Most of the pieces have pictures to go along
with the information on the site.

A well-written and well-published site, that was really interesting.

PORT NUMBERS
http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers

The port numbers are divided into three ranges: the Well Known Ports, the
Registered Ports, and the Dynamic and/or Private Ports.

The Well Known Ports are those from 0 through 1023.

The Registered Ports are those from 1024 through 49151

The Dynamic and/or Private Ports are those from 49152 through 65535

### UNASSIGNED PORT NUMBERS SHOULD NOT BE USED. THE IANA WILL ASSIGN
THE NUMBER FOR THE PORT AFTER YOUR APPLICATION HAS BEEN APPROVED ###

WELL KNOWN PORT NUMBERS

The Well Known Ports are assigned by the IANA and on most systems can only
be used by system (or root) processes or by programs executed by privileged
users.

Ports are used in the TCP [RFC793] to name the ends of logical connections
which carry long term conversations. For the purpose of
providing services to unknown callers, a service contact port is defined.
This list specifies the port used by the server process as its contact port.
The contact port is sometimes called the "well-known port".

To the extent possible, these same port assignments are used with the UDP
[RFC768].

The range for assigned ports managed by the IANA is 0-1023.

Blocking Unwanted Ads with a Hosts File
 http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
You can use a HOSTS file to block ads, banners, cookies, web bugs, and even
most hijackers. This is accomplished by blocking the Server that supplies
these little gems. Example - the following entry 127.0.0.1
ad.doubleclick.net blocks all files supplied by the DoubleClick Server to
the web page you are viewing. This also prevents the server from tracking
your movements.

Now includes most major parasites, hijackers and unwanted Search Engines!

In many cases this can speed the loading of web pages by not having to wait
for these ads, banners, hit counters, etc. to load. This also helps to
protect your Privacy by blocking servers that track your viewing habits,
known as "click-thru tracking".

OVERFLOW GUARD PERSONAL EDITION free
http://www.datasecuritysoftware.com/Overflow_Guard_Personal.html
The OverflowGuard Personal Edition is a version of OverflowGuard that
protects the stack and heap of Internet Explorer, Outlook 2000, Outlook
Express and all Active-X controls they use from buffer overflow exploits.
With this driver installed you will no longer have to worry about being
hacked with a buffer overflow exploit while surfing the web with Internet
Explorer or when you open an e-mail using Outlook or Outlook Express. The
OverflowGuard Personal Edition even protects against viruses and hackers
that lure an unsuspecting e-mail reader to a malicious web site. As with all
versions of OverflowGuard 1.0, when a buffer overflow exploit attempt is
detected an event is written to the event log and the process is terminated
before the attack can succeed. There is also an option to use only stack
protection.
