viruses. However no virus scanner is 100% effective as manufactures

ID Thief Turns Extortionist
http://www.msnbc.com/news/851175.asp?0cv=CB10
An identity thief tried to use a California woman's on-line accounts to
steal money, but she thwarted the majority of his efforts. The thief then
tried to extort money from the woman, offering to disclose his methods and
provide advice on protecting her information for $400.
When his offer was ignored, he reportedly became belligerent, threatening
harassment and making clear he knew personal details about her life.
Cyberstalking laws exist in most states, and people should report such
events to law enforcement officials.

CleanUp! 3 ~ free
http://cleanup.stevengould.org/WhatsNew30.html
includes support for Internet Explorer, Netscape and Opera.
Runs on Windows 95 through Windows XP.
Free disk space, make your computer run better/faster and protect your
privacy - all in one easy solution. All for free!
Introducing Windows CleanUp!, the quickest and easiest way to delete
temporary files from your system.
CleanUp! is a powerful and easy-to-use application that removes temporary
files created while surfing the web, empties the Recycle Bin, deletes files
from your temporary folders and more.
CleanUp! frees disk space and reduces the "clutter" on your computer helping
it to run more efficiently. It also can be used as a way to protect your
privacy on the Internet. You can even instruct CleanUp! to securely delete
files making it impossible to retrieve their contents using lower-level disk
tools - just another way of protecting your privacy.
++
NOTE from Steve, program creator
There currently is no way of telling CleanUp! not to delete files in the "My
Downloads" folder. What I would recommend is that you move any files you
want to keep out of that directory into some other directory. I do something
like this, and save things like software install programs that I have
downloaded into a different directory. This is "good housekeeping" and
ensures that you only keep the files you want to keep.
It's amazing how quick the "My Downloads" folder can, over time, accumulate
"junk" that you no longer want to keep.
There is also a CleanUp support group;
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cleanup/
***MfM*** This is the latest version, I have used it on my Win XP computer
with great results.

Troubleshooting boot times in Windows XP
Microsoft has improved the boot time required to bring the OS up with XP,
but users may still experience problems of slow boot
times. The boot performance problem often is the result of a
software/hardware combination, but these scenarios are hard to
troubleshoot. Fortunately, Microsoft has a special utility called Bootvis
that can help you identify devices that cause delays
during the boot process.
1. Download and run the Bootvis utility
(http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/platform/performance/fastboot/Boot
Vis.asp).
2. On the Trace menu, select Next Boot + Driver Delays.
3. Click OK. The computer will reboot and analyze the boot procedure. After
the reboot, you'll be able to see what happened
during the boot process, such as which drivers were loaded and which ones
took the most time to initialize.
4. Select Optimize System from the Trace menu. This will restart the
computer and optimize it for boot performance
