Stop Sign virus scanner / eAnthology

Question; I was surfing using IE 6, suddenly, this Stop Sign virus scanner
appeared and ran and came up with a whole huge list of supposed virus
infections and it generally made it hard to continue using the computer.
Do you know what it is?

Answer by; Ron Allen '24 Hour Support Help Desk'

The culprit site is http://www.eacceleration.com and the software is called
eAnthology.
You are not the only one who has complaints, as shown in this Broadband
Forum discussion:
>

According to one response on the forum thread above, the company is changing
the behavior of their program.
That they even bothered to respond is a good sign, I think. Still...

Their site does not appear to download anything unless a user clicks on an
online virus scan icon, in which case they apparently auto-download and
install the trial version of their eAnthology software. This is not what the
vast majority of people would expect to happen, and that is where the rub
is.
The software is installed when someone clicks on an **advertising banner**
for the product. The banner has been described as one of those pop-up things
that have an "X" in the upper right corner that looks like a close button,
but is actually part of the banner. Clicking on this "X" does not close the
window, it installs the software! That is just slimy, it is virus-like
activity as far as I'm concerned. Supposedly this only happens when the
users security settings allow it, but to me that is no excuse.

I also understand that AdAware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ already targets
this software.

Star Downloader ~ free
http://www.stardownloader.com/
Star Downloader is a download accelerator that can increase download speeds
by up to 400 percent.
Unlike similar applications, it is completely free.
It does not contain any banner ads or spy-ware.

The acceleration is achieved by splitting the file being downloaded into
several parts and downloading these parts at the same time. Download speeds
are further increased by downloading the file from the fastest mirror sites.

You may automatically resume broken downloads if your connection is lost or
if your computer accidentally shuts down. With the scheduler, you may
download files at certain times of the day. Star Downloader may also
automatically connect to your ISP and hang-up upon completion of downloads.

An integrated unzipping utility can automatically unzip and install
downloaded files. Star Downloader also integrates with your antivirus
program to automatically scan files upon completion of the download.

Star Downloader supports FTP and HTTP. Proxy is also supported.

Anti-Virus False Possitive
Antivirus companies each work differently in how they
read/dealwith and respond to virus material. The
virus information contained in one antivirus program
could easily be mistake as a real virus string by
another antivirus company/product. The happens on a
regular basis that one antivirus company will detect
a False positive in another.

A false positive is when an antivirus program picks
up a string of text that it believes to be related to
a virus infection. Antivirus companies must depend
on what "appears" to be when detecting virus and can
be mistaken.

Antivirus software is a good choice to scan your system for possible viruses,
however no virus scanner is 100% effective as manufactures cannot keep up with
the rapid change of viruses that happens daily.
Be sure to update yours regularly.
