A Sky Show Worth Waking Up For
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/11/18/tech/main529702.shtml
This week may be the last chance to see the spectacular Leonid meteor shower
for nearly a century, scientists say.
Despite a full moon, scientists predict Tuesday's storm of meteors will be
visible in the night sky from Western Africa to the Eastern United States.
It could be quite a light show.
"This may be the last great meteor shower until 2098," astronomer Jack
Horkheimer at the Miami Space Transit Planetarium said.
It peaks Tuesday about 5:30 a.m. Eastern Time, or 2:30 a.m. Pacific.
The meteors are dust particles shed by Comet Tempel-Tuttle, which swings
around the sun once every 33 years.
"We are going to plow directly into a dense debris trail that was shed by
comet Tempel-Tuttle 'way back in 1866," Horkheimer told CBS News
Correspondent Peter King. "It is the comet debris trail which we ride
through every November that causes the Leonid meteor shower.
Horkheimer said the Leonids are spectacular, in part, because the comet
debris travels very fast.
"Each little meteor slams into the earth's atmosphere at speeds of about
160,000 miles per hour," he said.
Comets are believed to contain pristine examples of the materials that
coalesced 4.5 billion years ago to form the solar system. The frozen balls
of ice and rock are rich with carbon-based molecules. Some scientists
believe Earth was seeded with the organic compounds necessary for life when
it was repeatedly pelted with comets early in its history.
Scientists planned to study the comets by air and the ground.
"We are eager to get another chance to find clues to two puzzling
questions," said Michael Meyer, senior scientist for astrobiology at NASA
Headquarters in Washington.
"What material from space rains down on Earth, and what happens to the
(meteor's) organic matter when it interacts with the atmosphere?"
Horkheimer said the best viewing will be on the east coast, but the shower
should be visible across the country. He advises staying away from bright
lights.
"Lay back in a lawn chair and look toward the east," toward the
constellation Leo. "High up above the horizon you'll see a sickle-shaped
group of stars. That is the front part of Leo the Lion. The meteors will
appear as if they're scattering out of Leo, on all sides of Leo, all across
the sky."
The peak is expected about 5:30 a.m. ET, but Horkheimer said there may be a
spectacular show earlier.
"You might have a chance of seeing several dozen, maybe a couple of hundred
bright, bright meteors," he said.
Horkheimer also recommends not bothering with a telescope or binoculars;
you'll see more with the naked eye.

United Linux Release Expected Next Week ~ by Richard Karpinski
http://www.internetwk.com/story/INW20021115S0010
The members of the United Linux consortium, which is building a
business-ready release of the open-source operating system, have scheduled a
press conference next week at which they are expected to announce their
official release. United Linux members have long been targeting a fall
release, and have happily announced in the past that beta releases have gone
well and the ultimate release looked to be running right on schedule.
UnitedLinux is made up of four Linux vendors: Conectiva, The SCO Group, SuSE
Linux, and Turbolinux. The four are building and will sell a common Linux
distribution that will help them compete with leader Red Hat as well as help
enterprises and hardware vendors by consolidating and standardizing Linux
versions.
In an interview earlier this year, United Linux general manager Paula Hunter
told TheOpenEnterprise.com that the release is "really focused on trying to
prioritize those features and functions that best suited the enterprise,
those things found lacking in other commercial Linux distributions."
United Linux has scheduled a press conference at Comdex in Las Vegas on
Tuesday to make an "important announcement." Interestingly, the event will
include spokespeople from IBM and Hewlett-Packard, which both will
apparently be supporting the United Linux release on their hardware.

If Microsoft Had Written Nmap ~ By Ed Skoudis
http://www.counterhack.net/base_clippy_image.html
Nmap , the premiere port scanner written by Fyodor, is a must-have tool for
security professionals and computer attackers alike. Unnecessary open ports
on a system could offer an entryway for an attacker to undermine the
machine.
Microsoft offers a variety of useful tools in its flagship business suite,
Microsoft Office®.
What if, in a bizarro, make-believe parallel Universe, Microsoft expanded
Office beyond Microsoft Word®, Microsoft Excel®, and Microsoft
Outlook® to include?. Microsoft Nmap®.

Finding Your MS Product Codes
Ever notice how Microsoft likes to put "product keys" on all
their software? Well, what do you do if you've lost yours and you
need re-install the software? I suppose you could call Microsoft
and ask them
for help (at your cost most often).
Here's another solution: If the program is still on your system
(or at least still has entries in your registry), there may be
hope. The info you need may be tucked away in the Windows
Registry! Here's how to find it:
1. Click the Start button, Run. Type in =93regedit=94 and click
OK.
2. Next, head to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft. Make
sure you open (double-click) the Microsoft folder.
3. Now, scroll down to the program you want to re-install.
Double-click its folder and look for another folder called
"Current Version."
4. Double-click that and look for an entry for "ProductKey" or
"ProductId" in the right windowpane. If you find it, you've found
your code!
It can be a bit of a pain to hunt through the registry like this,
but at least you don't have to bother Microsoft!
_______________________________________________
Remember: Before making Any registry change either suggested by
us or anyone else, Backup your registry! One wrong move in the
registry could render windows inoperable! With a current backup
you can restore your registry to its previous condition before
you made the change. Backing up is a simple procedure that takes
seconds and can save you hours of work later if you make a
mistake.
