Personal firewalls vs. Stealth Test, part II
August 12, 2002
http://www.pcflank.com/art27.htm
Almost six months ago we tested leading personal firewalls with our Stealth
test. The results were surprising: only four firewalls were able to pass the
test. Now we decided to check if other developers have improved their
products.
Just to remind, Stealth Test gives you opportunity to determine if your
firewall is successful in making your computer "stealthed". The "stealthed"
system is invisible to others on the Internet, so it is harder for intruders
to "detect" such system and thus far harder to attack. Indeed, "stealthed"
system is not absolutely safe system, and we should not overrate it, but it
is the first barrier made by firewall to stop intruders and it is better if
this barrier works.
The Stealth test uses five scanning techniques: TCP ping, TCP NULL scanning,
TCP FIN scanning, TCP XMAS scanning and UDP scanning. Using each technique
the test creates a packet and sends it to to port number 1 of your system.
If your firewall drops the packet and does not send any response it will
mean that your computer is "stealthed". Otherwise if there is any response
from your system it will mean that your computer is "non-stealthed" and your
firewall has failed this test.

Restoration ~ freeware
http://hccweb1.bai.ne.jp/~hcj58401/
Restore files which are deleted from the recycle bin by mistake.
Conversely, delete files completely.
Win 95/98/Me/NT/2000/ XP
Restore files which are deleted from the recycle bin or deleted while
holding down the Shift key by mistake.
Conversely, this program has another function that makes it almost
impossible to restore all deleted files.
You can use it after deletion of confidential documents, embarrassing files
and so on.
You don't have to install it, so it doesn't leave any garbage in the PC.
(You can also run it from a floppy disk.)
Even if a file seems to be restored, there is no guarantee that the contents
are correct.
After you run the program, please check the files.
You can probably restore it correctly if the drive has enough free space
and if it's just after deletion.
If you restore a folder, there is no guarantee that all files or folders
which used to belong to the folder will be in it.
If you can't find them in it, please search and restore them one by one.
If you still can't find them, it's impossible to restore them.
It will be almost impossible to restore any deleted files if you run the
complete deletion function.
To be exact, fragments of deleted files can be in last clusters of existing
files or allocated and unwritten files.
(Note that this function is not suitable for TOP SECRET information.)
Even if you find the information of completely deleted files, their contents
must be erased.
If you want to erase the information too, please run the function again.
When you use the restoration function, I don't think you will encounter any
damage due to bugs, since the function doesn't write anything to physical
sectors.
However, the complete deletion function replaces physical sectors.
Therefore, I confirmed that it worked without any problems by testing many
times.
As there is a rare possibility of damage or loss, please run the function at
your own risk.

Bruce Lee ~game ~ freeware
http://www.fullgames.sk/hra.asp?id=687
A faithful remake of a Commodore classic.
Manufacturer Mark Rosten
Win 95/ 98/ ME/ NT/ 2000/ XP
Anyone over the age of 25 should remember the Commodore 64, and may well
remember the classic game, Bruce Lee.
Although not graphically impressive, this PC version is faithful in every
sense to the original.
As in the original, you have to jump around the screen collecting all the
lanterns, while simultaneously performing flying kicks and more on the
baddies - ninjas and the like.
Once all the lanterns are collected you gain access to the next screen,
where you do it all again. Eventually you will meet the Big Bad Wizard in a
fight to the finish.
It comes with both one-player and two-player modes.

Tina's FrontPage Tips, by Tina Clarke ~ Show or hide colour coding of HTML
When you edit a page using the HTML tab in
Page view, Microsoft FrontPage automatically
colour codes HTML to distinguish between
tags, attributes, and values, as well as
comments and scripts. To show colour coding,
right-click anywhere in the HTML tab, and then
click Show Colour Coding on the shortcut menu.
To hide colour coding once the Show Colour
Coding command is checked, click Show Colour
Coding to clear the check mark.
TIP: If you want to modify which colours
FrontPage uses to display HTML, click Page
Options on the Tools menu, click the Colour
Coding tab, and then select the colours you
want to use.

Practical Joke Software

Freeware
Grumble... stupid error message. *click* Why won't this darn
thing go away? *nineteen more clicks* So it was a joke, eh? Very
funny. This malicious marauder will display a faux error message
on your victim's screen. The message will appear every three
seconds, and, just as your victim is reaching the breaking point,
it'll tell him how to stop it. Why would you do this? Because
it's fun, and because you're evil...

Modifying Your Colours
In our colour tip last week, we showed you how to change the
colour scheme for your Windows desktop: Right-click the desktop,
select Properties, click the Appearance tab. Can't find anything
you like? If one of the ready-made schemes comes close, customize
it to suit your style.
Select the scheme you plan to modify. In the preview area of the
Appearance (or the Advanced button in some operating systems)
dialog box, click the first item you want to change (or select it
under Item), then make the desired changes using the Colour, Size
and Font fields. Repeat these steps for each element you want to
change.
To save your customizations (incase someone else comes and
changes things!), click Save As, type a name for the new scheme
and click OK. Click OK one more time to apply the scheme to the
desktop. From now on, you can select that scheme by name from the
"Colour schemes" list. If you don't need to worry about others
changing your colours simply select apply and ok to set them.

XP-AntiSpy 3.6 ~ free
http://www.webattack.com/get/xpantispy.shtml
enhance XP's privacy
XP-AntiSpy is a small utility to quickly disable some built-in update and
authentication features in WindowsXP thta may rise security or privacy
concerns in some people. For example, there's a service running in the
background wich is called 'Automatic Updates', that may sound useful to most
people, but 'suspicious' to others. You can disable al these features
manually by going through your configuration, find the settings for each
etc, however with XP-AntiSpy there is no need to do this, since it will show
you all of them at once and let you choose which ones to disable. Not only
will it save you a lot of time disabling them - it will also allow you to
quickly re-enable them if you change your mind.
