AnalogX CallerID ~ free
One of the best improvements to the telephone in the last few years was the
addition of CallerID - finally a way to avoid all those telemarketer calls
and other less-desirable! :) Of course, it would be nice if the computer
could help make a good thing better, and with that evolved AnalogX CallerID!
CallerID is a straight-forward, using any Unimodem/V-compatible voice
modem that has Caller ID support, you can easily track incoming calls
including; who is calling and their number (if available), how many calls
have been received from this person, when the first call and when the last
calls were logged, and more! The program can easily be run minimized on the
system tray, with a special notification window that pops open when an
incoming call is received (which will automatically close).

Autoclave v0.3 ~ free
http://staff.washington.edu/jdlarios/autoclave/index.html
It can perform simple zeroing for the home user. It can also overwrite the
hard drive with specific patterns which exercise all the bits on the drive,
making it extremely difficult to recover anything at all.
Could the NSA recover anything from a drive which has been erased using this
disk?
I don't know. I personally doubt it.
But if that's who you're worried about reading your data, it's probably best
if you pound the drive into dust using a sledge hammer, and then fuse the
pieces together with a blowtorch.

Quick Find
If you like, you can put the Find command on your Quicklaunch Toolbar so
it'll be available with a single mouse click.
First, open Find by going to Start, Find, Files Or Folders.
Here you'll want to set up the Find parameters so they'll be most useful to
you, selecting the drive or folder you think you're likely to be looking in.
Then select File, Save Search and an icon with the search criteria appears
on your desktop.
Simply drag this icon to your Quicklaunch Toolbar and your Find command is
always easily accessible.

Never Dial A Connection
Stop Your Computer from Dialing up in the Middle of the Night
We get a couple of letters every week from folks having problems with their
computers dialing up the Internet for no reason!
That's not good. There are a number of causes for this problem, but one of
the common reasons is that the browser is configured to automatically dial
when you open it. I highly recommend that you do NOT allow the browser to
dial up a connection. You should explicitly start your Internet connection
and then open the browser after the modem is connected. It takes a little
more effort, but you'll be safer and have more control.
Do this:
Open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu and then click the Internet
Options command.
Click on the Connections tab in the Internet Options dialog box.
On the Connections tab, click on the Never dial a connection option. Click
OK.
The modem won't automatically dial up when you open Internet Explorer after
you make this change. You'll have to go into your Network and Dial up
Connections window to start up your modem.
You can make it easier for yourself by creating a shortcut to your modem on
your desktop.

Symantec Unveils Blended Security Software
http://www.pcflank.com/news300702.htm
New product called "Symantec Client Security" mixes firewall, antivirus, and
intrusion detection tools to better protect users' PCs from complex Internet
threats-including blended threats such as Nimda and Code Red.
Symantec Monday announced a new product that integrates the company's
desktop firewall, antivirus, and intrusion detection products into a single
suite intended to better secure corporate PCs.
Symantec Client Security melds the functions of all three types of security
software into a suite in which each part works together with the others to
protect PCs.
This means that if the antivirus software detects a virus on or entering the
PC, it can "tell" the firewall to raise its threat level and block the file
containing the virus from accessing other files or applications to keep it
from spreading. In the case of an attempted intrusion, the intrusion
detection system can "tell" the firewall to block the connection the
intrusion attempt is coming from and raise threat levels.
The suite also includes content filtering based on a URL list.
Symantec Client Security runs on Windows 98/ME/XP/NT/2000. It will ship
worldwide in an English-language version in the second week of August, with
French, German, Japanese, and Spanish versions shipping 10 days to 15 days
after that.
____________________________________________________________
Antivirus software is a good choice to scan your system for possible viruses,
however no virus scanner is 100% effective as manufactures cannot keep up with
the rapid change of viruses that happens daily.
Be sure to update yours regularly.
