Virus Dials 911
http://www.techtv.com/news/security/story/0,24195,3392631,00.html
Police show up only to find infected WebTVs.
By Becky Worley, Tech Live
July 22, 2002

A new virus has hit some WebTV devices, and its
effects could have ramifications for the emergency
phone network. Reportedly, once an attachment is
opened using the WebTV set-top box, the virus dials
911.

A customer service supervisor at Microsoft confirms
that 18 customers have called in to report the
suspicious WebTV behavior. WebTVs now go by the name
MSNTV, but older brands still have the WebTV
branding. According to Microsoft, both units are
affected. Reports of the virus first surfaced in
WebTV user group boards such as WebTV's alt.discuss
news group.

Those reports say that once the infected attachment
is opened, the WebTV shuts down, reboots, then calls
911. Several people have reported this happening and
then having a police officer show up at their door.

Tank game
http://gamehippo.com/category/new_title_7.shtml
This top-down view tank game offers multiple modes of play,
ranging from a simple "destroy all enemies on the level" task
to capture the flag games to finding your way through a fortress
and destroying a central facility there. There are three types
of enemies: stationary mines, moving mines and turrets which
shoot at you. Usually, levels start off easy, but after a while,
you need decent reflexes to avoid the multiple turrets and moving
mines that attack you at the same. This game also features a
deathmatch mode where you can compete with another human
player and a cooperative mode where two players are faced with
a task similar to the single player mode. The graphics are nice, if
a bit bland; additionally, there are a few clipping problems with
the tank graphics, meaning that you can get stuck in a wall while
turning, which makes the tank a little hard to control at times.
Overall, a nice, average action game which might keep you busy
for a bit.

XP Create Your Own Restore Points ~ Submitted by Daniel Kimsey
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/tips/july/kimsey1.asp
Windows XP makes it easy for you to take a snapshot of critical
system files before you make any major changes, such as installing
new software, adding hardware devices, or changing the registry.
(Windows XP automatically creates system restore points, called
system checkpoints, but you can create your own to make it even
easier to recover your system in case of a failure.) Note that using
restore points doesn?t affect your personal files, such as the My
Documents or Favorites folders. To create restore points:

Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to
System Tools, and then click System Restore.
In the System Restore dialog box, click Create a restore point,
and then click Next.
Type a description for your restore point, such as "Before Office XP",
then click Create.
If your system fails, press F8 in the boot menu, and then click Last
known good configuration. Windows XP restores your system to the
most recent restore point.

Microsoft's Corona Out of the Bottle
 http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,393038,00.asp
A Corona-fueled bash has hit the Web.
The latest incarnation of Microsoft's Windows Media Player --
formerly code-named Corona -- leaked to Windows enthusiasts'
Web sites within a week of the official launch date announcement.
Although Microsoft cordons off access to select groups of partners
and software testers, downloads sites have permeated the Web
bringing the next-generation digital media platform,
Windows Media (TM) 9 Series, to the masses.

Windows Media 9.0 introduces a new proprietary codec that Microsoft
is pitting against the MPEG-4 standard embraced by competitors
including Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple Computers. Apple's newly
christened QuickTime 6.0 includes support for the standard.
Both standards charge royalties for distribution or transactions.

MAC 'Jaguar' OS X Update to Arrive August 24 ~ By Jason Snell

You've already heard about the next version of Mac OS X's new features.
But now that new version has a proper name, a price, a release date -
- and a cute visual touch.

Due August 24,
Apple is enamored enough with version 10.2's code-name,
Jaguar, to integrate it into the final product itself.
Mac OS X 10.2's box is labeled "Version 10.2 -- Jaguar" and
features the familiar OS X "X" logo covered in a furry wild cat pattern.

Another mystery cleared up by Apple Wednesday: what it
will charge for this update. While version 10.1 was available
for only $20 shipping and handling, version 10.2 will cost $129.
People who buy a Mac running OS X 10.1 between now and
the Jaguar ship date will be able to upgrade to 10.2 for the
$20 shipping-and-handling cost, Apple says.

If you're not familiar with Jaguar's tweaks and features, here's
a quick reminder of what to expect when OS X 10.2 hits the
shelves next month.

Langa Letter: Maximizing ''System Restore'' In WinME and WinXP
 http://www.informationweek.com/story/IWK20020711S0009
Depending on how you use it, this component can be a help--or a hog!
By Fred Langa

"System Restore" is built into every copy of Windows XP and ME.
In theory, it's sort of a system-level "undo" command that lets you
recover from a failed software installation, a software conflict,
or other similar problems.
Microsoft describes it this way: "System Restore actively monitors
system file changes, so that if something goes wrong with your
computer, you can restore your system to a previous state
without losing data."

And that's true, as far as it goes. But, if the volume of reader
mail I get about System Restore is any indication, many, many
users are confused about exactly what System Restore can and
cannot do.

Antivirus software is a good choice to scan your system for possible viruses,
however no virus scanner is 100% effective as manufactures cannot keep up with
