Hi Mike
Did I read the Lindows site wrong - They want $99.00
for one year from users / or as I said -maybe I read
it wrong (TIC)- Are they going to pay each $99.00 to
be a tester/guinea pig for a beta system that is
probably far from ready. I wonder how much Walmart
paid them for the privilage of selling their OS.
I think they will have a tough sell. Now if they were
offering a FREE D/L for test purposes - they would
have a much better chance to succeed. I was ready to
sign Up as I am always open to new and improved but
for $99.00 no way - then it is only for a year.
They will go the way of BE/OS5 etc etc Too Bad.
That still leaves Apple if they would only see the light
and open up availablity for the many that want to
build themselves - I include myself - I would have
built a MAC probably prior to a PC if able. I would
love to have a self built MAC running OS X now.
Probably never happen as many have told me. But you
never know - Job's is now pushing for an increase in
market share.
As far as I am concerned - this availabily would
really give it a push.

Protect Your Money
*Source-Smart Computing Vol 13, Issue 5, P-93.
"If you ever do decide to respond toan unsolited e-mail, and for
whatever reason commit any money, at least take some basic
precautions before doing so. Never send cash; its untraceable,
and you'll never see the money again. sending a check is even
worse because the huckster can cash it and run off with the
money after copying your bank account number, name
telephone number, driver's license number and other
information off the check to possibly attempt identify theft.
Also think twice about using a credit card.
Scam artists can easily charge a huge sum on the card and
get away scot free and once again they can take your
information off of your card to pull a possible identity theft
scam.
The only good thing about paying with a credit card is that
if someone rips you off, it's very likely the credit card company
will refund your money once you plead your case.
We found that the best approach to responding to online offers
was to use a bank debit card that is associated with a credit
company so it can be used like a credit card. We went to the
bank and put a strict spending limit on the card so that any
charge over a certain amount would be refused. This amount
can't be resricted or increased over the phone, making it
inconvenient for you to increase it but impossible for scam
artists to tamper with because they don't have the card itself
(or and ID matching yours).
After responding to the offers for this story, we went to the bank
and asked for a recpalcement debit card with a different number
on it. It's simple, fast, and much more convenient than doing
the same thing with a credit card. Most people use their credit
cards so much to absorb monthly costs, such as car payments
and utility bills, that canceling a card and getting a new one is
a messy ordeal. No so with a bank card."

System Lock 1.2.1 free
http://www.r2.com.au/downloads/index.html?id=syslock
System Lock allows you to lock your desktop so that no other users
may use your computer.
Windows NT/2000 already comes with this capability,
but what about Windows 95, 98 & ME?
System Lock contains numerous Options for security and appearance.
It also has a unique protection system in that, if your computer
is
restarted or a power failure causes your machine to reboot,
System Lock will automatically lock the system on restarting,
so that you computer will remain locked.
This option is of course only an option, and every user may not
need this option.
Upon System Lock Launching it will automatically minimize into the
System Tray, ready for activation. If you simply double click on
the
icon, it will lock the system for you. Right clicking on it will
bring
up a context menu allowing you to open the prefrences Dialog,
or Unload it from memory.
If you add the paramater '/QUICKLOCK' without the quotes to the
end of your shortcut, System Lock will lock straight away and when
the correct password is entered it will unload itself from memory.

Mouseless Dialog Boxes
It's easy moving through the tabs on a dialog box without using
the mouse. Keyboard shortcuts usually equal speed, so it's
always worthwhile to do something with the keyboard if you can.
To move through tabs, all
you need to do is press Ctrl-Tab. To move backward through tabs,
press Ctrl-Shift-Tab. Tomorrow we'll cover some more techniques
for navigating a dialog box without a mouse.
