Yahoo bug on the rampage By James Middleton
http://nl2.vnunet.com/News/1132167
YIM flaw could put 60 million users at risk
The latest version of the popular Yahoo Instant Messenger (YIM)
software has been hit by multiple vulnerabilities which may allow an
attacker to hijack another user's machine.
Because of the popularity of the software, the vulnerabilities may put
as many as 60 million users at risk.

According to security researcher Phuong Nguyen, of security firm Vice
Consulting, the flaws allow unauthorised execution of programs on an
instant messenger user's machine via buffer overflows or injections of
Java or Visual Basic script in the instant messenger content tabs.
SNIP

Yahoo has responded quickly to the threat and has made a patched
version of the software available for download on its website.

However, the repaired version will remove some functionality from
the software until Yahoo can rewrite it with sufficient security.

The patched version can be downloaded here.

Windows NT Run Any File Type

Using the Start button's Run command, you can run any
registered file type, even if it's not an executable.
Running non-executable files, such as those with .doc and
.html extensions, launches the associated program to handle
the file. NT automatically registers common file types
during installation. Newly installed applications often
register their own file types as well. But you can alter
and create your own file type associations through
Windows NT Explorer. From the menu bar, choose "View", then
Options. Then click the File Types tab. From there you can
choose to create a New Type, Remove an old type or Edit
an existing type by clicking the corresponding button.

MS preps all-new warez busting antitrust complying XP SP1
By John Lettice
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/25423.html
Microsoft's 'Seattlement' Service Pack for Windows XP is to go into
testing within the next few weeks, and will ship later this year.
The company doesn't usually make a big marketing deal of
Service Packs, but for legal compliance reasons WinXP SP1 is
special, so it's been taking some journalists through what's in it,
how it will work and how it will comply.
SNIP
Other highlights. SP1 will include USB 2.0 support, and Mira,
Freestyle and Tablet PC support. It'll be about 40 megs,
downloadable or for sale on CD for shipping costs, which
will be sub-$10.
SNIP
And one last thing readers who're no better than they should be
should bear in mind about SP1. Microsoft is going to engineer it
so that it won't work on a widely-warezed activation key, which
as we recall escaped form a large friend of Microsoft beginning
with D. It would appear that Microsoft does not intend
application of SP1 to vape systems installed using that key, but
simply to freeze them where they are, and to block their ability
to use Windows Update. Microsoft has used service packs to
disable installations it deemed pirated in the past, and we'd
guess it's decided not to do this because it might hit legit
systems by mistake, or generate adverse publicity from
innocent victims.

Disabling Windows Update access does however up the ante, as
it'll at least make it more difficult for readers who're no better
than they should be to get hold of updates and patches.
Long term it is also logical for Microsoft to try to make this
impossible, not just difficult, so it's an area worth watching.
And lastly, Microsoft is no doubt aware of considerably more
compromised keys for XP than just the one, so we'd actually
be surprised if it was just the D one that got nuked in SP1.
You have been warned.

Tina's FrontPage Tips, by Tina Clarke

Easier tables

If you need to display data on a web page, but don't want
the hassle of manually typing it into tables, there is an
easier way. Simply paste the data (from a spreadsheet, say)
into the page select it, then select Table from the Table
Menu then "convert text to table", you can do this in
reverse as well. "Table" "convert table to text". In the
dialog box that appears, specify what delimiting character
was used to separate the data (probably a comma, tab, or
paragraph mark) and click OK. FrontPage will format the data
as an HTML table.

FrontPage "remembers" where the tabs appeared in
tab-delimited data-even though HTML doesn't recognize tabs.
However, you should convert your text immediately. If you
close and reopen the document, FrontPage will "forget" where
the tabs were and consider them spaces instead.

Advanced Finding
Need to locate a file, but can't remember its name? Windows' Find
feature offers plenty of additional ways to track it down. Just
fill in what you do know about the file on the Name & Location,
Date and Advanced tabs, and chances are Windows can find the file
for which you're looking.

Let's suppose the only things you can remember about a file are
that you opened it last Friday and that it was a Microsoft Word
document. Select Start, Find, Files Or Folders, and on the Look
In line, click the down arrow and select the drive on which the
file is located. (If you aren't sure, select My Computer.) Click
the Date tab, select Find All Files, then click the down arrow
next to this option and select Last Accessed. Select Between,
then complete both Date fields with last Friday's date. Finally,
select the Advanced tab, click the down arrow next to Of Type,
and select Microsoft Word.

Click Find Now, and the resulting list will include all Microsoft
Word documents opened last Friday. Hey, there's that file you
need!

Now let's look at another scenario. Suppose the one thing you
know for sure about the document is that it discussed windows
tips.

Select Start, Find, Files Or Folders, and on the Look In line,
click the down arrow and select the drive on which the file is
located. (If you aren't sure, select My Computer.) Next to
Containing Text (still on the Name & Location tab), type the text
that you know appears in the document--in this case, scuba. Click
Find Now, and check the resulting list for the missing document.
There it is!

(Note: If the resulting list is long--after all, you probably
have loads of documents containing the word "windows"--try
narrowing your search a bit more. For example, you might select a
file type on the Advanced tab or, if you know you accessed the
file in the previous month, select this option on the Date tab.
Once again, click Find Now, and with any luck, you'll spot the
file.)
