New stealth attack found against personal firewalls
By Brian McWilliams, Newsbytes.
http://www.computeruser.com/news/02/04/30/news1.html
A new technique for defeating personal firewall software has been
discovered.
But at least one firewall vendor said the trick poses little risk to
computer users.

Backstealth, a demonstration program that bypasses the outbound
data filters in firewalls from Symantec, McAfee, and other firms,
was posted last week to Packetstorm, a popular security tools site.

According to Backstealth's author, Paolo Iorio, the program is
designed to access a remote Web site and download a harmless
text file without detection by the user's firewall.

Iorio said Backstealth's network connections are invisible to many
firewalls because it operates in the same space in the computer's
memory that is allocated to the firewalls.

The utility is able to defeat outbound blocking by Kerio Personal
Firewall, McAfee Personal Firewall, Norton Internet Security 2002,
Sygate Personal Firewall Pro, and Tiny Personal Firewall,
according to Iorio.

A representative of Tiny Software said Tiny Personal Firewall
version 3, which was released last week and includes a new
application "sandbox" feature, is not vulnerable to programs
such as Backstealth.

The popular ZoneAlarm personal firewall is also not susceptible
to the attack, according to Iorio.

Turn the Preview Pane Off In Your Email Program
http://www.apcsnh.com/vacm/previewpaneoff.html
In Outlook and Outlook Express, there is a feature
known as the "Preview Pane". This is an area of
the screen where you can see the contents of an
email as soon as you highlight the email by simply
clicking once on it.

The Preview Pane option actually opens the email!

This is VERY dangerous because many of today's
email viruses will run when the email is opened
without you double-clicking on an attachment
or anything!

Burning A Ghost Image File To A CD

Writing image files directly to CD-R and CD-RW discs

Recent Ghost versions, Symantec Ghost 6.5 Enterprise Edition and
later, and Norton Ghost 2001 and later, can create an image of a disk
or partition and save the image as a file directly to a CD-R or CD-RW
disc.

Though Symantec tested a large number of CDR/RW drives with this
feature, you may encounter problems when using a drive that is not
supported or when the drive is not accessible to Ghost.

To determine whether the drive is on Ghost's compatibility list, see
the following documents in the Ghost Knowledge Base:

"Ghost 2002 and 7.5 compatibility with CD-R and CD-RW drives"
at: http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/vURL.cgi/ghost123

"Ghost 2001, 6.5, and 7.0 compatibility with CD-R and CD-RW drives"
at: http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/vURL.cgi/ghost124

To determine whether the drive is accessible to Ghost, see the
following document in the Ghost Knowledge Base:

"How to determine whether Ghost can access the CDR/RW drive"
 at: http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/vURL.cgi/ghost125

If you use a drive that is on the compatibility list and you
confirmed, by using the previous document, that Ghost can access the
drive, see the document "How to troubleshoot problems writing to CD-R
and CD-RW drives" in the Ghost Knowledge Base at:

http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/vURL.cgi/ghost126

This document addresses the most commonly encountered problems and
solutions, and provides links to other typical problems and solutions
in the section "Related problems."

If you still can't resolve the problem, prevent it by saving the
image file elsewhere, such as to another hard disk on the computer.
Then, while in Windows, copy the image file to the CDR/RW drive.
See the document "Burning a Ghost image file to a CD" in the Ghost
Knowledge Base at:

http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/vURL.cgi/ghost127

Tina's FrontPage Tips, by Tina Clarke

Drag that link

A quick way to insert a link into FrontPage is to position
your cursor over the Internet explorer icon and drag the
icon using either your left or right mouse button and hover
over your FrontPage Application Icon in the status bar of
your monitor, after a few seconds FrontPage will pop up and
you can then release the link, using the right mouse button
a dialog box will pop up asking you to 'Create Hyperlink'
the left button just deposit it. The link is then created
and the text is used from the title of the page you dragged
the hyperlink from.

Match Up!
Freeware
http://www.schworak.com/games/downloads/matchup.asp

This is a game of skill and of course, a little luck. the object
is to clear the entire board of all shapes. But how you clear
the board makes all the difference in the world. You see, the
more shapes you can get off the board in a single move, the
higher your score! To clear shapes, you need to find two or
more that match and are touching side to side, or one above the
other. Then you simply click on the group of shapes and they will
be removed.

Default Printer
Is your system set up to print to multiple printers--for example,
a couple of network printers? If you print to one of them more
than the others, make your favorite printer the default. Then you
won't have to change your print settings every time you print.

Select Start, Settings, Printers, and you'll see an icon for each
of the printers to which you're connected. Right-click the
printer you use most and select Set As Default. From now on,
whenever you use the Print command, your system will
automatically send the job to that printer.
