Ad-aware 5.8
http://www.lavasoft.nu/downloads.html

Latest update; runs under Win9x \ ME \ NT40 \ XP and Win2000.
New in this version:
Ad-aware 5.8 uses a new referencefile format.
This change was necessary to handle more tasks through the
referencefile, and avoid too frequent
updates of the Ad-aware binary.
The new referencefiles are named "reffile.awr".

The referencefile included in this distribution targets DownloadWare,
NetworkEssentials, IEPlugin, OpenMe.exe, GoHip and several
additional browser hijackers.

Identity Theft =97 Robbery in the New Millennium
 http://www.cbc.ca/consumers/indepth/identity/

It's among the fastest growing crimes in this country:
stealing personal information to get access to bank accounts
 and credit cards.
~~~
"Identity fraud is the fastest growing kind of fraud in North America.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission says it accounts for 40 per cent
of all consumer fraud complaints.
Privacy advocates in the U.S. say the number of victims may be as
high as 750,000 a year.
Senator Maria Cantwell, a Democrat from Washington state,
says identity thieves have targeted more than one in five
American families."
Kaspersky Labs and Ritlabs introduce anti-virus
protection for The Bat!
Posted on 16.4.2002
April 16th, 2002 Reliable Virus Protection For The Bat!.
Kaspersky Labs (www.kaspersky.com), an international
data-security software developer and Ritlabs
(www.ritlabs.com), a developer of mail systems and
software enabling full control over transmitted data,
announce the introduction of anti-virus filtration
for the popular email program The Bat! Thanks to the
joint effort users of The Bat! now have automatic
virus checking for all incoming and outgoing messages
at the moment they are received or sent.
Nowadays e-mail is the main source for virus threats
- 90% of all registered incidents occur using
electronic mail. This fact makes mandatory the
development of adequate protection. The integration
of Kaspersky Anti-Virus with The Bat! represents an
important step by giving the users of one of the
world's most popular e-mail clients (The Bat! has
over five million users world-wide) the ability to
automatically check all their electronic
correspondence. Kaspersky Anti-Virus automatically
checks all the components of incoming and outgoing
messages, including attachments (archived or
compressed), messages contained on any nesting level,
OLE objects and the e-mail body text itself. Thus,
all the e-mail on a user's computer will be already
checked for viruses.
Worries of Cyberattacks on U.S. Are Aired
www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A50900-2002Apr25.html
Chinese Military Is Looking for Ways;
Students Seen Gearing Up for Disruptions
By Bill Miller Washington Post Staff Writer Friday
U.S. officials warned yesterday that the Chinese military may be
searching for ways to attack defense and civilian computer networks
in the United States and Taiwan. But they said intelligence analysts
have concluded that China so far lacks the ability to cause much
disruption.
The assessment was included in a classified report recently issued by
the CIA that also warned of a more immediate cybersecurity concern
involving Chinese students.
Although the Chinese military cannot yet disrupt key computer
systems, "you have to be mindful of it and concerned they might have
that goal," a U.S. government official said yesterday. "The Chinese
themselves have acknowledged, in their own press, their interest."
But Chinese students could be planning a series of cyberattacks
against U.S. government and business Web sites during the next
several weeks; it's similar to widespread hacking that took place a
year ago after the collision of a U.S. Navy surveillance aircraft
and a Chinese jet fighter over the South China Sea, said the
official, who asked not to be identified.
There is no evidence tying those "harassment" activities to the
Chinese military, the official said.
Fast Application Kill
http://www.liacs.nl/~dpalomo/distr/FAK/
Freeware
Fast Application Kill is an system tray application for MS
Windows that makes it possible to kill processes in a fast way by
using the processes selection menu. This application should run
on Windows 95, 98, Me and NT (2000). Although this application
lets you terminate programs by a simple click, you must be aware
of the consequences of a process termination. If a process is
forced to terminate and all unsaved data is lost, so for your own
sake, be careful.
Picking Passwords
Seems like everywhere you go online, you have to create a new
password. Here are a few tips:
Never use your own name as your password. Your name is way too
obvious, and you'd be shocked at how many people do this. Or
they'll use their middle name, the name of their wife, children,
or some other name that's just as easy for someone who knows them
to guess.
Never pick a password that naturally follows from your user name.
For instance, if you user name is "ham," don't pick "eggs" for
your password.
Try to always use a mix of numbers and letters. If you just use a
plain word for your password, someone
else can figure it out more easily.
Antivirus software is a good choice to scan your system for possible
viruses, however no virus scanner is 100% effective as manufactures
cannot keep up with the rapid change of viruses that happens daily.
Be sure to update yours regularly.
