What I like about the Listserv:
It's *less public, unlike Facebook or a blog. Privacy is important for
those dorky questions you don't want
clients to see you asking, like the time we had to think up different
terms describing the consistency/colour/odour of poop for a drop-down
menu in a computer program used by nurses. Welcome to my exciting life.
Answers are fast, whereas with FB you have to wait till people log on
(unless they have notifications turned on. and who wants that?!).
You get answers from a variety of people who may not have FB accounts.
It's easy to administer, when the admin isn't so lazy <er, that's been me>.
*What I meant by "less public" above is that our conversations can't be
seen like they could on Facebook, but they can be found
with a Google search on your own name or in the archive if you know where
to find it.
What I dislike about the Listserv:
It's poorly understood -- members don't always realize when they're
chatting with all of us.
Someone <cough - ok, me> hasn't been cleaning out members who don't renew,
so we have <gasp> interlopers here <including me;
I'll renew soon!> <crikey, I'm turning into a hooligan>.
What I dislike about Facebook:
We have a public page that only MEA staff can post to, and we have an
informal group that's used mostly for fun,
but under-used for editing issues. We could create a closed/secret group
there, but someone still needs to manage who's on it
if it's intended as a members-only perk.
And not everyone wants a FB account.
What I like about Facebook:
I have a gazillion relatives so I'm on it a LOT, otherwise I'd never know
what my family was up to. And I have a lot of Trump
rage that needs to go somewhere. :)
It's an informal space, so when someone comes across a clever or funny
language meme or post, we all get to see it and
join in on the fun with reactions or chatter. Good for social bonding that
way.
I don't like blogs. Too much work, too much reading, too public for editing
questions you'd rather ask privately.

Greetings all,
This is a gentle reminder that the MEA executive is discussing the future
of the listserve. Is this still a useful discussion tool? Would it be
better to close the listserve, perhaps shifting discussion to our Facebook
space?
Basically, the listserve doesn't seem to be used as much as in years past,
perhaps due to changing technology and a natural turnover in membership.
Please share your thoughts now, if you haven't done so already.

As an alternative to the listserve, discussion could happen on the MEA’s

Finally, I remind interested members to renew their MEA membership, as
we’re currently in the middle of a membership drive.
