Any number of things could be the problem.
not enough disk space,
file permissions on the file won't allow you to read it,
file permissions on the folder you're unarchiving into don't allow
writing,
the built-in unzipper doesn't like the zip file,
and so on.
Drop to a terminal, and try the unzip command (preferably after
creating a new folder to hold the extracted files) and it's more than
likely that the problem will go away.
(unless it's a disk space issue) in which case, you'll need to free up
some space first.
Remember, that if there's loads of small files in an archive, each one
when uncompressed from the archive will eat a minimum amount of space
depending on what your block size is set to on the mac, and this
varies depending on the size of your partition, so it could be that
you have physically enough room for the files, but because there's so
many, it eats up the disk space and leaves you short of space for the
complete unarchiving.
This happened to me once, even though I had several gigs free, but the
archive contained several thousand tiny 1-2K files, Each one of those
files took 64K or something similar on my hd, and robbed me of several
megabytes of space during the unarchiving process, and thus depleted
my disk space and was unable to complete the unzipping process.
Likely though, it's just one of those cases where permissions are
wrong (if you copy it fro a cd-rom, this happens a lot) or it's just a
zip file the finder doesn't like.
A terminal session can solve both of these problems.
If you need help with the terminal, drop a line, and we can assist.

Hey all. I am trying to unzip an 810mb zip file, and it says that
decompression failed. What is going on here? Thanks.
