Here are some notes which may help if you have not yet installed snow leopard. 1> with the system turned on, put the disc in the drive. when the installer comes up, you can quit or restart the system and hold down the c key after the chime for about a couple of seconds or till you know the drive is spinning up.
2> when the drive stops spinning, use command-f5 or fn-command-f5 for a portable to turn vo on. you may need to raise the volume. for a mac mini, you will need a keyboard and mouse plugged in. You will be sitting on the language table with english selected. After a bit of drive activity, voiceover will speak in fred's voice.
3. after you press enter to choose english as your language, the disc will whirr again. At this step when the whirring stops you can choose to erace and install or upgrade. to choose upgrade, just click continue. to choose erace and install, go to utilities and choose disc utility and activate the erace tab and choose the drive you want to erace and then click options and pick from among the choices. erace free space will not do a clean install but the other three options will. the choice you make will partially determine the amount of time the install will take. 0 out data takes the shortest time and 305 pass erace takes the longest. 7 pass erace takes about 6 hours on a 200gb partition.
4. Once the erace is done you can close disc utility and then click continue to install macosx. you will be presented with adialog for setting the partition / disc to install to along with the customize option. when you choose the customize option, there will be a number of rows with checkboxes. the top one is dimmed and it is icential mac software anyway which is why we are here. There are some other single rows and some collapsed rows. if you find a collapsed row none of which you want, you can uncheck that checkbox and the entire row will then be unchecked but I think you have to uncheck all the languages if you want to make sure they don't get installed because the row doesn't have a checkbox. If you uncheck something and it does not get installed and you find you need it later, you can install it without installing the entire os.
5. when you are finished customizing the install, click ok and then click install. you can focus on the percentage and hear clicks as the percentage increases or you can focus on the time and it will click as it decreases but it will be less clicky. the computer will restart when finished.
6. the music will play and then a voice will provide instructions about what to do after the music stops. Install using the streight upgrade option will provide you with a brief screen and it is done. On a computer that requires a mouse like a mac mini, when performing a clean install, if the mouse is not plugged in, it will want you to connect it but you can skip the mouse.
7. The setup assistant will offer you an opportunity to interact with a20 minute tutorial on voiceover before continuing. if you are upgrading, this will not happen.
8. either skip the tutorial and turn on vo with command-f5 or fn- command-f5 or yu can go through the tutorial and click continue. Setup assistant then accessibly guides you through setting up your mac. Once the setup is done, you can close the dvd and eject it. if there are software updates available, they will be offered upon install exit.
