So I've been trying to learn voiceover for ages now. My trouble has
been, I still had a windows PC. It meant when I had trouble grasping
the new opperating system, I just went back to me old PC.
Well, the day has arrived. My windows laptop has expired and my new
Mac Mini is on the way. I know I can install windows on it, but once
I do, i'm in the same boat I've been in all along. I'm not happy with
windows performance and jaws seems to break everything. I'm not
starting a jaws verses VO debate here, I just want to switch. I'm
wondering if tthere is some kind soul out there who would be willing
to go on skype or let me ring them on the phone and sort out a few
major stumbling blocks so I can get on my feet here. I've followed
help and tutorials but there are a few things not happening as I think
they should.
cheers,
Jess

This is not really a problem. To change the time zone to any world
location does not require using the map. All you need to do it to
choose a major city in your current time zone. Then navigate to the
menu of cities and type in the first few letters of that city. The
menu will then jump to that city and you can press enter to accept it.

Hi Folks!
There is a little program called Filelist, which, in addition to
renaming files, adding/deleting characters from folders/files' names,
etc, will also generate music playlists, and even create
"Playtainers". The program is VO-friendly, although many of the
buttons aren't labeled, however, they do have help tags.
As to programs which will play .M3U files, I believe the Cog
application will also work. In fact, the playlists which it creates,
itself, are in the .M3U format.
If memory serves, both Cog and Filelist, should have listings on
the
VoiceOver Compatibility List.

Keith,
Perhaps, if you download them to your computer, you could do a
couple
of things:
1. If you know you're gonna be downloading the raw files
(unarchived), you could switch your browser's download location,
temporarily, to place the files in the "Podcasts" folder, inside your
iTunes Music folder. From there, you should be able to import them.
2. Download them to your Downloads folder, as usual, then use
the
"Move" workflow, to move them from the Downloads folder, into the
Podcasts folder. From there, you should just be able to Import them
into iTunes.
In any case, you're probably gonna want to create sub-folders
for
each podcast, just to keep them organized. Again, you might have to
do this, manually, or, if you edit the info in iTunes, I think it'll
do all that dirty work for you.
I suspect your problem is happening for two reasons: First,
you're
not "subscribing" to these podcasts through an RSS feed. Second,
you're downloading the raw .MP3 files, opening them in iTunes, right
from where they're downloaded to, and they're probably lacking
"Podcast" in their Genre fields, so iTunes may not be doing all the
behind-the-scenes housekeeping it normally does.
Also, you'll wanna make sure iTunes is set to keep your library
organized, and make sure your Podcast settings are right.

HI Frank!
The list, which Greg maintains is the VoiceOver Compatibility
List (http://w3.wmcnet.org/vo/index.php
).
This list provides a link to the developer's site, what category
the
application falls under (i.e. System/Utility), a "VoiceOver Score" (1
being least accessible, 3 being somewhere in the middle, and 5 being
fully accessible), A description of the application, and tips & tricks
for using the program with VO, if any are needed.
Also, you can add info for any apps you find, which the VO
community
might find of interest, and/or, useful.
I'd actually contemplated just such a database, shortly after VO
came
out, but lacked the web programming skills to make it a reality! Greg
has done a superb job creating and maintaining this list, however, so
Hats Off to him, on a job well done! I've even contributed a few apps
to it, myself!
Enjoy!

HI Frank!
The list, which Greg maintains is the VoiceOver
Compatibility List ( <http://w3.wmcnet.org/vo/index.php>
http://w3.wmcnet.org/vo/index.php).
This list provides a link to the developer's site, what
category the application falls under (i.e. System/Utility), a "VoiceOver
Score" (1 being least accessible, 3 being somewhere in the middle, and 5
being fully accessible), A description of the application, and tips &
tricks for using the program with VO, if any are needed.
Also, you can add info for any apps you find, which the VO
community might find of interest, and/or, useful.
I'd actually contemplated just such a database, shortly
after VO came out, but lacked the web programming skills to make it a
reality! Greg has done a superb job creating and maintaining this list,
however, so Hats Off to him, on a job well done! I've even contributed
a few apps to it, myself!
Enjoy!

Use the tiger files.
Leopard added a lot of features to the os, but for the most part (with a
few exceptions) voiceover itself hasn't changed all that much, so what
was valid in tiger will still be valid in leopard.
There are some notable changes such as braille support, and the numpad
commander, but for the most part, you won't have any trouble using what
is taught for tiger with the leopard os.
Also, there are a couple places to find lists of programs compatible
with voiceover.
One (not updated recently though I plan to fix that) is at
http://www.softcon.com/mac
In there, you'll find a list of programs compatible with voiceover.
Greg Kearney maintains a list as well, and his is both more complete,
and more up to date, but unfortunately, I don't have the url handy at
the moment, perhaps Greg or someone else can post it.
And, I know there are a few other lists scattered around here and there,
that offer similar information.

Subject: [macvoiceover] a cool mail tip
Date: Thu, 26 Jun 2008 10:03:16 -0800
I was bored and figured this out. Sorry if you've red something like
this before, but in safari, if you see an e-mail, or you just want to
send someone an e-mail, please follow the following steps to quickly
load mail and send a message. Please do note, i've only tested this
with leopard, please leave me a comment and let me know if this works
for tiger as well.
1. press command+l
2. Type "mailto:/personalemail@xxxxxxxxxxx" replace the text after the
"/" with the e-mail address you would like to send messages to. Do not
put the quotes in safari
3. press return
4. mail will open and put you in the subject field or it should. I've
noticed that focus isn't always on this subject field, if not you can
just vo around the screen and attempt to find the subject field.
5. you can then compose your message how you would like
6. then press command+shift+d to send the message, and your placed in
the inbox of your mail program
7. go threw your e-mail, or simply "apple q" to close the program
hth a bit
Please go to
http://www.gwfans.net
to leave your comments. VO+command+h to get to the "a quick leopard
mail tip" and scrole down the page, vo+space on the word "comment" to
load the comment submition form.
thanks

Hi
This works in just about every operating system as long as your
browser can launch your e-mail client. The correct structure of the
URL, though is
mailto:person@xxxxxxxx
without the slashes. This is actually exactly the address you'd put in
if you were going to put an e-mail link in a webpage itself, but it's
a handy little shortcut as well.
