Definitely useful.
I've run into several pdf documents that were scanned documents, and it's quite the pain. Can't do a thing with them at the moment, if your ocr will work, by all means, write it. 
I'd be happy to test it.

I'm thinking of using Googles open source OCR which I have working on a Mac. It seems to do a good job and can deal with upside down pages. 

This will likely be an Intel, Leopard only thing at first.
