[macvoiceover] how does the smtp server know?

Hi all, I'm writing this message on the mac, but one thing I don't understand is, how does the smtp server know which port to send mail on, because I'm on a comcast connection, and they send their mail out on port 587, and earthlink sends their mail on port 25, so how does the mac know which port to send mail on, because if mail communicates with the provider, even when on a different connection, then this mail program is really something, just wanted to know, so, how do I make replies go to the list, because when I replied to a person's message from the list, or maybe it was the mac visionaries list, it apparently went to the person, and did not come to me, and I don't see an outbox in the list of mailboxes, so what is up with that also? I'll send this now, and hopefully, it will be sent.
