Ok, I see that script is available, but how do I use it? What do I do
with an apple sscript once I've downloaded it? Never have used any
apple scripts before. That might be a dumb question, but I haven't.

If it doesn't work directly in pages, you could always use one of the
apple scripts on softcon's mac pages

There's scripts there to get the word count from text edit, and you'd
only need to change the name of the application (probably) to get it
to work in pages.
I don't have pages, so obviously haven't tried this, but assuming it
behaves itself, it should work properly.

Hi all, as far as getting a word count for any document you're
working on in pages, I have found no way to successfully do this
with VO. IN the preferences, there's a checkbox that saysdisplay
word count at bottom of window, and this is all I can find as far as
settings related to word count. I've VO arrowed around the window,
and nowhere can i find the word count for any document that I may be
working on or have opened. Is this something that the VO user can't
currently get at? Has anybody found a way to do this?
