but it is not a desktop, it's a finder window. get used to that and a world of wonder will open for you.

Well, personally, there's more on my desktop that I want to access
often so the desktop is what I leave open. But for those who want to
access their Applications window more often, yes, you can leave that
open when you reboot and that will work very nicely for you.
