I use iChat or Adium with my AIM account. When I need an audio chat, iChat does the job perfectly. Either iChat or Adium will work for file transfers. I haven't had a need to use the actual AIM client for the Mac, so I cannot speak for its accessibility compared to Adium or iChat.
