is there a way to get the memory load amount? would a uptime command
in terminal do it?

From the description, it sounds sort of like a memory leak. you can
lighten
the load considerably by turning off a lot of the stuff you don't
need in
safari and on your system in general if you find that after running
safari
for a while things jam up.
