Place the following into a file name text.html and then open it in textedit 

This is a sample file with a table

<tr>
<td>cell one row one</td><td>cell two row one</td>
</tr>
<td>cell one row two</td><td>cell two row two</td>
</tr>
</table>

This is text after the table.

I just used textedit to write out a HTML file and then opened that file in TextEdit again with the option turned off.

If you have an HTML table in the file and then open that file with the Ignore rich text command check box turned off in the open file dialog you will get the table rendered in textedit.
