ncftpd is an excellent ftp server. I've used it in the past, and was very satisfied with it. It's not free, it costs around $100 to register, but it's unlimited users. If that's too much for you, and you only need a few users, you can still use it. Just set your maximum users to 3 or less, and it'll work just like the fully registered product. Alternatively, you could run it on an .edu domain, in which case it would run as a fully registered system as well.

Unfortunately, not all of us hae access to a .edu domain. :)
