That was the oddest thing! A senior advisor and I figured it out. I dono how this would a mattered, but I had changed the permissions in the command i, get info screen on everyone, to read and write instead of just read only, then, we also went in under system prefs/sharing on the file sharing service, clicked options, and told it not to use ftp nor to use a f p, but only s m b. I then unmounted the network drive and remounted it, and at that point, it asked me to log on. I don't exactly know how this happened, but Sheri, that's the advisor, thinks that somehow I was logged on as a guest, not as my user. she thinks once it had me authenticate with my short user name/pwd from the Macbook, it then logged me on correctly, and that's! why then, I was properly able to do what I needed to.
