Can't you temporarily try the display on the main usb just to find out? At any rate, I wouldn't just resign myself to living with sluggish menus when other people don't have them. If all of us keep asking questions, we're bound to find your problem eventually.

Keith is correct, attributes do not work in pages but breaks do and it reads which page you are on when you move. This doesn't show up in braille though. Apple has a ways to go especially with braille but they're improving things with each new kitten so that's good. I just hope we don't have to wait for 10.7 for more accessibility features.
