Suzanne,
Just use Mac OS 10’s provided DVD application. It should launch when the DVD
is inserted. You access the menu bar, with VoiceOver, in the usual way. I.E.
VO-M. I, usually, press Command-0 to make the video half-screen, which reveals
some controls that are then accessible by moving around the screen. There are
so hot keys, but your friend will have to look for them if desired, as I don’t
use the program enough to remember them.
